george1515 reacted to SAGuy in Vesuvio Pizza Bangkok - Soi 8
Great photos there @sydney69er
I agree, Ottos in the second alley on the right off Soi 8 comes in second after Vesuvio IMHO.
However, on evenings where Vesuvio is full, it is a very credible Plan B back-up.
Ottos does have one advantage over Vesuvio though. The second alley where it is located is also where the infamous Lolitas BJ shop is to be found. Isn't BKK great? You can get a BBBJ and a decent pizza afterwards, all within 150 metres of each other).

george1515 reacted to SAGuy in Vesuvio Pizza Bangkok - Soi 8
Backstory
Nan, who works at WN04, was off last Thursday and wanted to go out. When asked where did she fancy she replied: burgers, KFC or pizza! There is no pretence about Nan!
I'm not a fan of fast food and so pizza seemed like the best option.
Ordering pizza in BKK is like the proverbial 'game of two halves'. There is the mass market version, much beloved by the locals, which IMHO is a gooey mess of dough, stodge, oil and cheap cheese, all topped off with Ketchup!
However, BKK also does boast some very good pizzerias and one of my favourites is Vesuvio.
Vesuvio
This Italian owned pizzeria serves authentic wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza. There are no stodgy thick crusts to be found here!
It is a small place, which maybe seats 15 inside and another 15 outside, so you need to be mindful of this when you visit. We were there just after 20.30 on a Thursday night, so the evening rush was over and there were free tables inside.
It is quite easy to find. When walking into Soi 8 from Sukhumvit Road, it is located down the first side alley on the right hand side of Soi 8. About 30 metres in on the left hand side and there it is, bang opposite a very gaudy looking bar.
The menu is to be expected and has all of the usual antipasti and salads etc. The choice of pizzas is extensive and there is one for every taste, even Hawaiian!
The Italian mixed platter as a starter looked very appetising and the Roman tourist sitting next to us rated it highly. A good sign for an 'ethnic' restaurant is if they attract visitors from their own country and it is very commonplace to find diners from the 'old country' eating at Vesuvio.
Nan went with the seafood pizza and I chose the ham and mushroom, because I am boring.
Both pizzas came out within about 15-20 minutes and they are large! This is why I skipped the starter. The look on Nan's face was priceless as she was more used to the smaller sized circles of dough served up by Pizza Hut etc.
To be fair to Nan, who normally has a sparrow-like appetite, she managed to finish off half of hers and had the waitress wrap up the other half to take back to WN04. She claimed she was going to give it to Tew, who had a bad month, but who knows?
I then persuaded her to try the tiramisu, which I knew she would enjoy. That was demolished and so was a great suggestion!
Summary
A great place for authentic pizza. Most of the pizzas started at THB 370, although they have a lunch time special that runs until 15.00 where you can get 2 for THB 650.
I try to visit there once a quarter and it has always been consistent. It was Nan's first ever visit and she enjoyed it very much.
The quality of ingredients is very good and you can tell that the owner runs a tight ship in terms of standards.
Service was very efficient and friendly, with 3 waitresses.
The atmosphere is not what you would describe as romantic, like some trattoria-style restaurants, as it is too small for that. We were there for about an hour.
All of the customers were farangs, including Italians, Brits and some Scandis.
I would certainly recommend Vesuvio if you want that pizza fix and it is open for lunch and closes at 22.30.
Nan's Pizza - Plenty of Seafood Toppings
Nans Pizza again, but also a view of my ham and mushroom pizza
The Bottom Line - I thought it was very reasonable for quality food
Special Bonus Photo - Nan's Mai Tai at the bar we went to afterwards (the first of many cocktails!)
Ciao

george1515 reacted to jaredblanc in New Multiple Entry Visa
The new 'Destination Thailand Visa' is tempting me to move to Thailand. (while my new house in NZ becomes an investment property and I can rent it out).
The only thing is I need is to find an employer that will let me work remotely from Thailand. (my current employer would not be open to me working remotely from Thailand).
I know a previous employer of mine (working in software) with whom I had a positive working relationship has employees working in the Philippines working at their timezone (they don't need to work NZ/AUS hours) so I'm so tempted to reach out for a role but see if they'll allow to work from Thailand.
The video will explain some of the concerns around the VISA if anyone is interested to watch and has been thinking about making the move as well.

DTV is very interesting for people like me, 180 days without leaving (will never happen) multiple entry for 5 years, yearly check if you have 500K THB on your account.
is apparently already official on the Thai evisa website

george1515 reacted to Gambino in SIM card
I've posted on this topic before, and will share it here as well. If you go directly the AIS flagship store in EmQuartier Mall, you can get deals that are not advertised anywhere. My pre-paid plan is $4 US (150 baht) for 30 days. That includes 5GB of 5g data. If I go over 5GB (very unlikely), it's then free unlimited data at 3g speeds.
Your choice of either a SIM Card or E-sim.
I have had the same Thai phone number for over a year, just by topping this up every time I'm here for a visit.

george1515 reacted to Bwana_LB in New injectable PrEP on the horizon shows incredible promise
(Copied from elsewhere. No indication of how long approval might take or cost, but this is a huge improvement on the best PrEP available now)
Gilead, a California based pharmaceutical company, announced on Thursday (20 June 2024) that it was ending the phase 3, blinded clinical trial of its new, twice-a-year shot for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) against HIV, lenacapavir, because it is too effective.
In this sort of clinical trial, some participants are randomly assigned to the new intervention that's under investigation (i.e. lenacapavir) and some are randomly assigned to the current standard of care (i.e. Truvada or Descovy, PrEP pills that must be taken every day). Why? Because it would be unethical to use placebo when we know that once-daily PrEP pills do prevent HIV.
The trial is also "blinded" to prevent investigator bias from influencing the results – to the maximum extent practicable, the investigators carrying out the research do not know, while the trial is being carried out, which participants are getting which treatment, nor do they know how effective those treatments are.
But an Independent Data Monitoring Committee (IDMC) has access to all of the data. The IDMC can see, while the trial is ongoing, which participants have gotten which interventions, and they can see how effective those interventions are.
The IDMC saw that none of the 2,134 women who received the twice-yearly injection of lenacapavir developed HIV. 0 cases of HIV in any of the participants assigned to lenacapavir.
There were 16 cases of HIV in the 1,068 women assigned to Truvada. There were 39 cases of HIV in the 2,136 women assigned to Descovy.
At that point, the IDMC has an ethical duty to recommend the blinded trial be stopped, and all of the participants assigned to Truvada and Descovy be offered lenacapavir. Why? Because they know lenacapavir works, it is superior to either Truvada or Descovy, and once that fact has been established, it would be unethical to deny participants the option to receive the more effective PrEP option of lenacapavir.
Lenacapavir is not the first injectable PrEP agent. FDA approved "apretude" in 2021; it must be injected every other month. The game changing nature of lenacapavir is that it only requires two injections per year in order to achieve 100% efficacy.

george1515 reacted to CJ-BLF in New Multiple Entry Visa
The land border crossing is currently 30 days as well. It was changed as part of the post covid marketing. You are allowed two land entries per calendar year. Exemptions can be extended 30 days for each entry.
There is no VOA for westerners, it is a 30 day visa exemption. The VOA was also changed from 15 days to 30 days post covid. They cannot be extended.
Be very careful with overstays, they can get you banned for years.

I saw a few shows in Patpong back in the 90's. Ping Pongs, razors, bananas, opening beer bottles and shooting the darts out to pop balloons tied to the roof. Very educational.
Saw one girl squirt half a banana out and a guy in the front row caught it in his mouth and ate it. Quality entertainment.

Red Lion has some good English Breakfasts too. Last time I was in town they had a Baht Buster deal 129 Baht for an English Breakfast, eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrown, tomato, baked beans, mushroom, toast, coffee, juice. Not a bad feed.

george1515 reacted to Knobby in Air China
I have seen mixed reviews about the airline. Mind you I have used Cathay Pacific & Ethiad and while I didn't totally "hate" each of those flights I was very underwhelmed with the experiences.
I am not expecting perfection, 5kg carry-on limit, maybe not the best meals and maybe the screen won't work (so I read)
I can get around these factors, Get snacks to take on at the airport, take my laptop with movies loaded and kindle and do the neck pillow work around ( take out the stuffing and fill it with things like socks and t-shirts)

george1515 reacted to sydney69er in Hyatt Regency
I am back staying at Hyatt Regency. I love this hotel. Best location on the corner of Suk and Soi 13, super modern (opened in 2018), great buffet breakfast, awesome Club Lounge on Level 27 with great view, very nice gym and swimming pool on Level 6. Only 280 meter walk to CIB, and about 450m to Cindy's. i doubt I will go any further than 450m in the next 5 nights.
I booked standard room at 6800++ per night. Used a free Suite upgrade and let me tell you the Suite is SWEET! Separate lounge room and huge bathroom.
In my small mind I thought this would impress the girls! last time I stayed in April, I also used Suite upgrade. Brought Patty from CIB back and she didn't mention anything. Brought Nutty from Cindy's, she didn't mention anything. Guess they seen it all before. Last night brought Gaga back and she did say 'Oh big room'.
Funny thing is I stayed a 2nd time in April and brought Nutty back again. Was only in the standard room this time which is still very nice just not as big. Nutty mentioned on this one, just saying, oh you have different room this time!

george1515 reacted to KIWI66 in Dentist recommendations please
I walked the the Soi's of Sukumvit , looking at the many Dentists clinic's around, I was in Asoke, not fat from Terminal 21, I noticed several farang , coming out of the Bangkok Smile clinic, so I approached them, explained my apprehensive state concerning Dentists in Thailand etc, they all said they had been attending Bangkok Smile Dental for many years, no problems occurred. In the waiting area it was full of farang,,, so I went and registered & paperwork etc,,, the dentist was great.....but will add to this story
T had a early morning appointment one year, I had a late night in 'Nana plaza', I stumbled out of the hotel bed pulled on the shorts & Tee shirt form the night before, & just made ti to the clinic on time, relaxed back in the chair, dentist was cleaning the teeth & filling's, the dental assistant's were smiling & giggle away at something( being hot weather I only had on light sports shorts ( I had gone no underwear). The Dentist, gave then a stern look, everything went quite, for a short time, the dentist finished her work on my teeth, a big smile & laugh on her face 'saying you have a good holiday ENJOY), the nurses gave me some very sexy looks, I didn't really what it was all about. Arrived back Soi 8, decided 'Shower time, took me short's of lying them front side upwards down, and i spot A HUGE FULL SET OF LIPSTICK MARK, RIGHT WHERE THE 'THE OLD MAN HANGS DOWN', I'm so glad the staff at Bangkok Smile clinic ahd a great conversation starter for the rest of the week

george1515 reacted to ipartridge in Nana city hotel soi 4
It gets mixed reviews on these boards. I like the place but I can fully understand the people who say the don't. The rooms are very good now as a lot have been refurbished. It is geared up for guests as there is a separate desk by the lifts for the guest to show ID etc, this is more convenient and discrete than going to reception. No charges for guests, I suspect if they tried the hotel would empty. It should be fine for your needs.

"I yam what I yam and dats what I yam!" Popeye.
The Nana Hotel has had a refurb in parts, so I heard. The sights and sounds from staying there make it priceless! The hiso boutique hotels tend to be soulless and you could be anywhere. If staying at the Nana, then you know exactly where you are!
@Eddyseybrew the Miami Hotel on soi 13 has had a total refurb, but due to its location around the corner from The Thermae and all of the streetwalkers on Sukhumvit, it is also still full of hookers!

After all the years i have stayed at the Nana Hotel I think I may have bagged their best room. It's basically a suite and is pretty much the size of two rooms, but that aside it is posistioned above Hooters and I have three large windows looking down onto the NEP entrance and also where the freelancers gather.....maybe they secretly log your visits and thought his time has come for a bit of VIP hospitality!!...highly unlikely but for just under 1,800B a night it is excellent value!

Landed yesterday at BKK Saturday 10am
7 minutes to walk from plane to immigration.
3 minutes through immigration
10 minutes to wait for my bag and bang in a taxi. No queues at immigration
Taxi took just over 45 minutes from Old Swampy to Sukhumvit Soi 13, a bit of traffic on the highway. Taxi cost 275 Baht plus 2 tolls, 25 and 50 baht.
Good to be back!

You can just book fast track only if you prefer. The car service is certainly more expensive than taxi, but you won't have to wait in the taxi queue (they bring the car directly to you out front of the terminal), and you will also get a driver who won't try to avoid the toll roads and knows where you want to go with no communication issues.
