    My top three bars are:
    1. Stumble Inn: great people watching, great live music, open front, just a great place!
    2. Fitzgerald's: great food, great people watching, nice staff (usually)
    3. Bully's Pub: great Thai food, great selection of drinks, air conditioned, nice place to hang around for a while

Why do the dancers at Straps ladyboy a-gogo at NEP wear panties?
Because it's the law in LOS! The Thai health and safety act clearly states:
(7)(c)1: "All manholes must be covered when not in use."

I'm pretty paranoid about such things. In general, I try to keep a very low profile, so this would simply ease my mind that extra bit.

I had problems too initially. I forget exactly what they were as it was a long time ago but remember giving up in frustration. Then, a few months ago, probably chasing a BL lead, tried again and bingo.

Their system is lousy there's no doubt. Clear your cache and give it another shot.

Unfortunately doesn't always go this way. A few years ago, hopped in a Taxi heading towards Asoke and was head in my phone, scrolling through work emails on the way. Not so deep mind that I didn't notice the driver come off well before Rama IX and avoid both toll-gates. Anyway, arrived at the hotel and he's sticking an extra B125 on the meter for the Airport Fee and both tolls. Told him no way, we didn't go through any tolls. He then gets out of the taxi screaming and hollering , trying to shame me into paying him. I jumped out, told the hotel staff to take my bags to the exec lounge (was checking in upstairs), stood there while he kept shouting and screaming, he even offered to drive me "to a police station to talk with them!". Not a fcking chance my son. At this point the bell-boys are getting embarrassed saying I should just pay him, but I stood my ground and the driver shouted again, "we drive through both gates, you pay me now!". So I politely asked one of the bell-boys to loudly ask him in Thai, so everyone there could hear, "If we came through both gates, we would drive to this hotel along Sukhumvit road. So why did you exit the highway near Rama IX and drive down Asoke?". Quietness followed, I paid the man what he was owed and not a cent more.

    Hi Dan,
No trouble, I have forgotten myself about this post ... Yes Adelphi Grande is too far from the action for me and I like to be at the same time in the heart of the action and in a quiet place : few cars (soi 8 has a dead end), some nice bars and restaurants (Viva, In Vite, Det 5,  Monsoon, ...), massage salons, tailors, street food ...
I am not sure about the payment upfront. Maybe just ask.
All this is so theoric right now ...

    Hello Ari,
My sincere apologies for missing this. Neither did I get a notification.
The distance is 3km to nana plaza and 2.5km to cib. Too far? Well for me it is not as i enjoy walking. Adelphi Suites is alot closer to the action no doubt and I am tempted to change my march 2021 reservation to the latter hotel. The thing is that I am very familiar with the people and my booking is just an email without payments upfront. I don't think I can get that at A Suites.
Again,  apologies for the delay in responding.

    Cheers

    This info is from Frommer's
    Train
There is no international train routes into Cambodia
    Air
Can fly into Phnom Penh(PNH) or Siem Reap(REP)
It is noted that if flying into Siem Reap that Bangkok Airways has a monopoly on all direct flights between Bangkok and Siem Reap so it is cheaper if on a budget to fly to Phnom Pehn and then take boat or bus to Siem Reap.
    Bus
Take bus from Morchit northern bus terminal to Aranyaprathet. The trip takes five hours. Once there take a tuk tuk to border for 50 to 100bht. From there you have an option of bus, shared or private taxi, or a seat in a crowed pickup truck. There is a free shuttle bus from the border to the place where the buses and taxis are parked. Many choose to spend the night at Aranyaprathet to break up the journey. It takes between 2 and 3 hours to get to Siem Reap.

Again this info comes right out of the Frommer's book I have not done a trip there from Thailand. I have only flown in from Vietnam myself. I hope this helps you out.

haven't done that trip overland for a long, long time, so my info would be out of date..

Good resource is the Lonly Planet Forum.

Theres loads of back packing orientated travel services running out of Khao San road...some at unbelievable low prices.. Particularly the ones that head direct to Phnom Phen, cheap for a reason, some do very long stops at "truck stop " type places..captive customers and then pull into their destination...a guest house at night in the dark...therefore pressurising you to stay that establishment, with all the kick backs to the tour organisers...So ultra cheap is not always best.

For sure theres public minibus, and bus services to the border, did it in reverse last time and picked up mini bus back to Bangkok. Thais like the Casino,s cross border.
Can't give you specifics, because long time passed..but once on the ground it will be real easy to sort. I'll look up a Private minibus / bus service my LB friend uses to shuffle round the country...raves about it,"just like Aeroplane" ?

@bangui : That is damm fast, for BKK.

@those of us who not so lucky to live in BKK and just come on holiday a few days a year.
Of course you can take the cap and considering what you just spend on the flight, it does not make a dent in your budget. However I have found the train to be a good alternative, given that you have only light luggage (not more than a trolley). Also you have to good view from the train.

One additional tip from my side. If you are not in a hurry, change at Phaya Thai and take the BTS back to Sukhumivit, it's easier to change there with luggage.

For the benefit of one who has only been to BKK twice before, would you please explain the difference between the three taxis? Especially in terms of where one finds each one.

Very sad indeed. And with no local equipment or facilities, they are struggling to find the plane or bodies. Thailand is giving support, as is the plane manufacturer ATR. The plane was only 6 months old.

Disturbingly, I recall a comment by a Bangkok Airways employee to me a couple of years ago. I asked why that day's BKK airways flight to Luang Prabang (on an ATR turbo prop) had been cancelled for poor visibility, when the Lao Airlines flight wasn't. Don't think I need to spell out his answer for you.

An awful tragedy, I hope it was a freak unavoidable accident. Not sure the black box will give that info.

Its a shame when there is any needless loss of life, and knowing that river well at this time of year any initial survivors would have been washed down river..

On a lighter note at least the airline didnt try to paint out the company logo.

Thanks reacted to pikogpatter in Round trip in the North/NorthEast - any ideas?
Been to LOS for Buddha knows how many times but i have never done a round trip to the north and north of north east (have been to Isaan several times but only the Roi Et district, Yasothon and Mukdahan) and travelled by bus a lot af times – and in the back of a pick-up a few – can not be reccomended...

This time i am thinking about spending some of my stay travelling around by bus and/or train, and i would like to go from Bangkok and visit Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Nong Khai, Udon (Thani) Sakhon Nakon, Khon Kaen,, Roi Et (the city itself) and then back to Bangkok and possible to Pattaya)

Anyone here have tried to do such a roundtrip – and if so any ideas of how to do it (train or bus)?

Have read that you can buy a Visit Thailand Railpass valid for 20 days and valid for any train but is it worth the 1500 Baht – beeing told that trains are going at a very slow speed – or is it better to go by bus?

I prefer to travel during daytime so i am able to watch the landscape.

Many of us here in the US endure a crazy path to LOS. Some get lucky and can fly out of a hub getting a good deal and more of a
less painful journey. I can speak from both sides of the fence having flown from the East coast by way of ATL, TX is a crazy
flight, and even lucky enough to have flown from LA and Seattle. Now I have the pleasure of traveling from the great state of
Alaska. Lol, this will be my second tour from this vast block of ice (for at least 8-9 months out of the year). It will take me
almost a full day and half just to arrival at the Gates of LOS! I know someone is saying, if its so much of a hassle, why do it?
Well it is and I will continue to fight thru this torture and pain. Add into the mix super inflated prices as many airports in AK
only have seasonal dates. This tour will give me the chance to see 4 stops coming and 3 on my return. No mad at all, just admire
you lucky guys in UK and OZ. You guys have the strength of the EUR or the great advantage of a 10hr or less flight plain. Fully if all things go right, I will now be in BKK at 0450 am. Lol, guys any thoughts on a short time room or early check-in hotel? I would love to get
there and be close to Nana by 0615-0630 am. Still working out the kinks of where I plan to stay on this trip as my last adventure had me inthe Woraburi. The Boss Inn looks promising and maybe trying my hand at the Majestic Grand for a night or 2 might help to shake of the
travel funk. Not to mention the MG seems to be a favorite of many BM's and it is quick runnings to and from Nana. Ok its almost 1am and I
have to be up and ready for the Peyton Manning show!

Flown from Melb with them 4 or 5 times...no issues. You usually have to book well ahead (12 months) to get super cheap fares. I have a ticket in March for $350 return so can't complain, but again, purchased 12 months prior.
