I think avoid the chain based optical shops, Top Charoen is the leading company and are very expensive. Independent places are a lot more reasonable with options that are stylish but not necessarily designer brands. That said, convincing a Ladyboy to take a regular brand over a designer brand will take some doing! -
When I by glasses for me and the Mrs they try the same hard sell. I just say no. Hers usually cost 9k, reading only. Mine were 13k for reading at different distances for work. I wouldn't say you were ripped off but you paid for a fully loaded package with expensive frames I would guess. Back on the subject of dentistry, I am now half way through having my teeth realignment with Invisalign trays. Cost of treatment 100k, equivalent price back home in the UK would probably be slightly more than double that. Dental work here is top class and cheap compared to most of our home countries. -
Maybe a bit off topic, but I had my first experience with Thai healthcare and its costs just today. A few days ago, I noticed my longtime regular girl was beginning to use her phone while holding it very close and realized she needed eyeglasses or contact lenses. She just turned 29 and is getting to the age where vision starts going south. We went to a chain optical place called Better Vision in Siam Paragon mall. There was no appointment, we just walked in and an optometrist gave her eye exam. Afterward, she chose a pair of frames and the Dr. proceeded to lay out the various options and upgrades for the lenses, stuff like extra-thin lenses, tinting options etc. When it was all over, my wallet was lightened by 28K baht. Her glasses will be ready for pick-up in 2 weeks (they send the frames overseas to Japan for lens installation). The hard sell on upgrades reminded me of buying a new car and having the dealer try to load your car up with a lot of dealer installed bullshit just to jack up the price. I've been wearing contact lenses and eyeglasses for decades myself and so I already knew what was and what wasn't needed for ordinary eyeglass lenses. Still, 28K baht for it all was more expensive than what you would pay in America. I wonder if it was the same mentality found elsewhere in Thailand of farang customer = jackpot. -
I have had a lot of work done at Bangkok Smile, at both their old locations & their newer one on Soi 5. Service always excellent & quality of the work likewise. Had one implant done there which required a bone graft, ( graft sounds in depth, but was quick ,painless & inexpensive). All work including implant have stood the test of time & in fact some being complimented on by Aussie dentists. -

I'll be in town in a couple of weeks and would appreciate any recommends for an optometrist/eyeglass supplier. My LASIK has finally lost effectiveness after 18 years and American choices are overly expensive. I see Top Charoen everywhere, are they a good choice? Thanks.
