We all have our own brand of snobbery P&G. You're clearly a food snob

By the way Citrus is about 1500 baht so a bad choice if you're trying make a point.

I've stayed in the Marriott (5k a night) but have eaten Thai food at roadside food stalls for 40 baht .... is that a better example ?

scottie1954 reacted to Rodrigo in Thailand has been downgraded by the FAA
Yes they found significant safety concern in the way Thailand has given air operators certification to some thai airlines. ICAO gave Thailand enough notice to rectify it but in typical thai fashion they messed it up. Then to make matters worse they invited the FAA for an audit thinking it will have a better outcome. But it was worse.
Now they got help from EASA and got a better result. In fact Thailand has only two major issues. One was on dangerous goods and the other was giving this air operators certification to some airlines.
If they had suspended these licenses then the major concern would have been removed.
Now due to the action by FAA Thailand has decided to go for the EASA certification system.
Actually there is huge commercial rivaly between FAA and EASA. But EASA is winning due to Europe and of course the former British colonies. If FAA had not done this I think Thailand would have gone for FAA certification.

Yes the airlines rating actually has no real bearing on it. It's just a newspaper poll who frankly do not know what they are talking about.

If this had been plonked onto Thonglor or Langsuan (Ploenchit) it would be the perfect location surrounded by other upmarket restaurants, coffee shops etc.

Judging by how long the fit-out took, they presumably spent serious time and money getting the look exactly right for their plans. That cost plus the very high rent will mean they have to sell a lot of booze (rather than just food) to have any chance of getting a return of that investment. Time will tell if it works. Personally I'd have put a simple steakhouse there selling 500b Australian beef Fillets and pretty much replicating what the Beefeater has done in Pattaya. Packed out every night. Excellent quality at very reasonable prices and appealing to broadest spectrum of visitors incl. almost all of those who frequent Soi 4.

Very true. I've never yet met a Thai who likes Mexican and my missus ranks it about as low as Indian food for choice of places we go to eat together. It could well be the perfect excuse for some.

Dont think this place is comparable with the nearby cheap joints.
Regardless of prices offers a nice alternative in the Soi 4 area, with no need to walk to Soi 11 or so.
Bad or good it is for us, I think it contributes to a new look of Soi 4, albeit being sideways. Let's say less mongering. Just as hooters does.
I don't think they will be patronised by the orphanes of paradise and golden bar.
Needs to attract customers and the location is not much ideal to catch passer byes, other than majestic grande guests or people just off Annie's.
I believe they have to invest in marketing

It pretty much looks like standard restaurant prices for soft drinks, beers and wine; cocktails however seem rather expensive. I'll definitely give the place a try later this month.

no need to be specific where it is... anyone in the business knows it

there are 4 area in the PB Hotel with three different operators who all run their part of the hotel autonomously and very differently ...

Ground floor left side (no parking space): older rooms that have not been renovated in a very long time, dark and dingy, and will hassle you if you have 2 girls with you and they will try to jack you up for more money, if they do, tell them you want an extra towel.
Ground Floor right side (curtained parking spaces): these rooms were all renovated about 5 years ago, a bit worn now again, and the bathrooms are not looking like great, but good water pressure and lots of hot water, the sex chair, and lots of mirrors (if you are a narcissist).
2nd floor (enter from reception in the lobby): they have rooms on the second floor which were all renovated in the last 3 years or so, good for ST, and also rooms that are LT, the rooms all the way in the back are much larger and are good for longer staying guests and last i knew had large refrigerators and couches beside the normal bed and fixtures..
3rd floor (never been open to the public): i have never seen the 3rd floor open in 20 years of going there.

considering that most folks go there for short time, and the expectations are not that high, IMHO all the rooms are passable and considering the price, no complaints ... clean rooms, clean sheets, clean towels, soap, condoms if you need (pay extra), big beds, most always a motorcycle taxi in the parking lot to take you back to the BTS or Nana.

scottie1954 got a reaction from Robert.Farang in Gulf airlines dominating the BKK airfeed (and add more capacity with the 380's)
So far I often read complains about the Middle East carriers being supported by their governments.
The story is slightly different but would be OT.
What R.F says refers to another side of the expansion of the gulf airline fleets: "your own" government doing so.
At least no blames on the carriers can be presented for this so, in a few words, (relatively speaking of course) "blame yourself", not the people flying those airlines.
The debate could expand on the many military contracts assigned to keep those industries running (and not doing much good to the world...
I have anyhow observed that gulf airlines are not THAT cheap and most of their rates are matched by western airlines.
Was it the hen coming first or the egg?
Facts are that with their hubs halfway through Europe and Asia (for instance) they can put together much higher load factors (LF) with better revenues.
Staying in our topic (BKK) none of the EK (for instance) European airports can offer a higher number of daily flights to BKK than EK itself
With much fresher airplanes they also win the case.
Not saying this is bad or good, the whole subject has many faces as a diamond.
But it is a fact: they made the best out of a remote location in the middle of nowhere (Gulf airports) and grew a completely new business.

Hard to tell which practice is more odious - the (several) hotels that charge 1K baht joiner fees, or the Ambassador's
20 baht charge to run a girl's ID thru their copier machine.

I wasn't sure where to place this thread, so it may get moved to the "Hotel Review" section. Anyhow......

A BM here recently asked about the ladyboy guest policies of a BKK hotel. This gave me the idea to email various hotels around lower Sukhumvit inquiring about their guest policies and whether ladyboys are welcome as overnight guests. The hotels I contacted are all within walking distance of Nana Plaza, CIB, Paradise bars as well as other LB venues such as Nuch Salon. I focused on hotels located on the odd number Soi side of Sukhumvit since most guys are already familiar with the policies of the hotels on the even number Soi side such as Marriott, Phachara, Heaven@4, etc.

They all received an identical email from me:

    Hello,

Can you tell me what your guest policy is? Can I have a ladyboy guest stay in my room overnight?

    Thank You,
    ******* *****

The hotels I have received replies from so far are listed in the order they responded, along with their Soi location as well as the per-night price for a standard room. I contacted places ranging from budget hotels on up to higher end properties like the Sofitel and the Westin. The replies are all verbatim. If you need clarification, their email addresses are on their websites. As they respond, I will continue to update here. I will also be emailing other hotels for the purpose of determining what their guest / ladyboy policies are as well.

If you think about this properly there is no way you can get around having the stamp in your passport.
It is done for legal reasons to prove (or disprove if you like) how long you have been in the country.

You cannot simply ask an immigration official not to stamp your passport because you dont want to upset your teerak. :No No Tut Tut:
Well you can try..........but it will make you an object of suspicion, and it may lead to them pulling you aside for some questioning
.And Im guessing that is the last thing you want as you start your holiday.

I agree. I spend from 15 to 25 nights there, multiple visits. Some short ones, 2-3 days and some kong inescapable, up to 9 nights. Everytime I start as a new customer and never got a sort of upgrade or so. Staff at concierge, tho', do remember me well and so does security. But receptionists never make you feel like a real regular. Even if you come back 4 days after the previous stay.
Still I can live with that. Location is perfect, breakfast enjoyable and price is ok.
