Well, I've just gone through the process with Thailand Elite for a 5 year Privilege Entry Visa (PE Visa) and have this morning received confirmation of my Membership nr. I had been considering moving back to Thailand for about 2 years when I received some good news 2 weeks ago which accelerated my decision. Once I had made up my mind that starting a new chapter in my life, thus moving back to Thailand, was the right decision, I re-acquainted myself with all the Thai visa options available. I'm 46, so not eligible for a retirement visa, which means it would have to be a Student Visa, the new 6 months visa, various multiple-entry options, the PE Visa or just go in and out via the 30 days visa exempt system. After weighing up the various pro's and con's of each Visa, I decided the PE Visa was the easiest option around. Sure, it costs 500K Baht, but over a 5 year period that's not so much more all the other options would cost either when taking visa runs into consideration.

This is the timeline it took for the membership to get sorted:
Sunday, 22nd of November I asked for info via the Thai Elite website ( http://www.thailandelite.com/index.php). Monday, 23d of November I received a reply with explanation, requirements and application form (6 pages). Monday, 23d of November I emailed them a scan of my passport, scan of a picture and the application form in pdf format. Tuesday, 24th November Thai Elite emailed me acknowledging receipt of my application and explaining the procedure. Main point was that they were waiting for Immigration clearance which could take 5 working days. Wednesday, 25th November I received confirmation that my application had been approved by Immigration and was given bank details for remittance of funds. Monday, 30th November I transferred the funds from a UK based HSBC Premier Account and emailed them the remittance details. Wednesday, 2nd December they emailed me acknowledging receipt of funds and informed they were in the process of setting me up on their system. Membership ID nr. would follow in a couple of days. Wednesday, 2nd December, a few hours after their previous email, I received my membership nr, together with some practical information I have opted to receive the actual visa upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport. In order for everything to run smoothly Thai Elite has asked me to communicate my arrival details 5 days in advance by either phone or email so that they can arrange for a pick up at the gate and an escort to immigration. All in all I must say that I'm extremely impressed with their service, it was fast & efficient + every time I rang their office the girl(s) I was speaking to spoke excellent English. If budget is an issue than this Visa might not be for you, if however, you're willing to pay for comfort and ease of mind this is the way to go in my opinion. Let's be honest, if you're looking to emigrate to Thailand without intending to work or start a business and don't have enough funds to afford a 500K expense, your best option in most cases would be to stay at home.
Below the last email from Thai Elite confirming my membership...

I recommend the street vendor directly across from New Wave bar (just past CIB on Soi 7). Everything I've tried there so far has been really good, but their papaya salad (Som Tom) is especially good. Me being the falang that I am I always tell them "no spicy", and it hits the spot every time. If you want to get some BBQ then go to Soi 4. Setup in front of Stumble Inn you'll find Un, and IMHO she makes the best BBQ around. If you're looking for a good desert the ice cream vendor at Dubai on Soi 4 (next to Hilary 2) can't be beat. 100B for a 3 scoop cone of some of the best ice cream I've had in a long time.

A new app is available for iphone users ( very soon android as well ) that enables you to keep your own phone number whilst overseas and also not be charged the ludicrous global roaming charges of most telcos . Developed by an australian company called Norwood systems . I think this app may become the " uber " of the phone world . Its free to join & you get some free minutes to enable you to try it out .
I downloaded it from itunes the other day and its very easy to use . Can buy credit at anytime from your itunes account also & can purchase additional telephone numbers which could be very handy for bm's .

Stayed at an AirBnB place on Suk Soi 31 that was really nice. I was staying with my LB gf and there was no problem bringing her back or her walking out on her own. Might be different if I brought back a different girl every night though.

Downside: no safe in the rooms
Owner tried to charge me for electric and water for a 1 week stay. Told her it must be stated otherwise she can't charge. She persisted and I told her
I was going back to SF and would report her and she wouldn't be able to list again and she relented.

Some really nice places out there ... stayed at another on Suk Soi 46 for $28 / night. Tends to get you out of the Nana area which I like.

I stay in a condo now and bring different girls back all the time ... no one has said a word to me about this being a problem. I do walk them out in the morning ...

was great to see you mate as I got out of the taxi to check in to the hotel and what lovely company you had with Ja. Just to update this hotel. Tonight I got a phone call on the hotel phone, i thought maybe they are reminding me I check out tomorrow. But to my surprise I got a freebie from a ladyboy who stays in room 37. She had seen me come in the last few nights with ladyboys and clocked my room number. So off I trotted down to room 37

I was originally booked into the JW for this trip, but about 3 weeks ago I received a marketing email from Accor announcing a fire sale with 40% discount on offer, downside was that it needed to be pre-paid. Out of interest I checked what they were offering and found quite a good deal for the Sofitel, so after some deliberation I decided to cancel my booking at the JW and bite the bullet in favour of a pre-paid room at the Sofitel.

It is my first stay at this hotel and to be honest I'm wondering why I haven't stayed here before. The place is much better than The Landmark or the JW, there are no loud groups of kids around and the location is near perfect. The pool area is good with sun in the afternoon, the restaurants are top notch and the coffee shop on the ground level serves fantastic coffee. There is no joiner fee and on the 2 occasions I've had a guest there was no need for them to leave ID at reception.

Pics below are of the 'Opera Suite'.

Living room which is quite spacious. Wifi is free and fast.

Bedroom with a very comfy king size bed. The place is totally noise free and the curtains black out any light. For a very light sleeper like myself there is no need for the usual earplugs.

Nice bath in the massive bathroom.

Large shower cubicle with rain shower. Water pressure is excellent.

Double sinks with plenty of amenities.

Pool area which is very relaxing with light music in the background.

Booked a one bedroom deluxe through agoda, and paid 2,700B a night. The room could use a refresh, but by no means is it a dump. It has a two burner stove, microwave, electric kettle, and a full size refrigerator. It also has all the cooking supplies you need like pots, pans, spatulas, can opener, 4 sets of silverware, 2 sets of cups, plates, mugs, bowls, etc..., and if you need anything else just call down to the front desk & they will bring it to you (i.e. rice cooker, toaster). It also has a combo washer/dryer which will come in very handy if you are staying for an extended period. There are two 36" TV's, 1 in the bedroom, 1 in the living room. The shower has both an overhead "rain" head and a handheld one, but they cannot be used at the same time. There is a bum gun. I find the bed to be a bit too soft, but I like a very firm bed so most will find it very comfortable. There is also a clock radio that actually sounds pretty good. It has an AUX cable so you can plug in any phone or MP3 player. The Wi-Fi is pretty good, and if you bring your own cat 5 cable you can plug in directly. The room safe is big enough to fit my 15" laptop, but would not be able to fit anything bigger. Like mikel stated "the balcony was filled with an air conditioning unit so was useless". The room came with breakfast included & it's very basic. I wouldn't pay anything extra for the breakfast, but if I'm awake when it's open (6:30 - 10:30) I'll grab something. It's a very short walk to NEP, CIB, & Nana BTS, but it's still very quite. The staff is very friendly, and have no problem with LB's. The only bummer is there is a 1000B fee if you bring more than one guest per day. I already knew about this because of the useful info on this forum, but I claimed ignorance when I brought back two guests and they let it slide the first time.

Totally agree ,,, in regards to the flip of the coin ,,, regardless of the number of spins and what the previous spins were the odds still stay at 50% ,,, of course after spinning/tossing 10 heads in a row it becomes more likely tails will come up , but in fact the odds are still 50% ,

Also stayed there on my last week in November. I had Paris come up from Pattaya to spend the last two nights with me. Reception just rung me up to let me know she arrived. I went down to tell them she will be staying with me for my last couple of nights. When I checked out at 9am to go to the airport two days later, I asked is it ok for her to stay till checking out time ? They said no problem.

Here is a taxi price list that I snapped on my way back from Phachara Suites on soi 6 to the airport. It says 700 on the list but the driver only asked me for 500, I gave him 700 anyway as I already had it ready.

4000THB for the River Kwai/Tiger Temple looks pretty good and a good bit cheaper than what I paid from an official tour site.
