I am also a fan of Pala Pizza, It is outside Asoke BTS, next to the ground level entrance to the MRT station.

You can either eat inside the restaurant or they have a take away window if you are on the move.

We all share a common number one reason for going to Thailand, but the delectable LB delicacies aside, I find Thai to be among the most delicious cuisine in the world. It is up there among my strongest excuses for going to Thailand and remaining in Bangkok. However, it is a legitimate reason, and I am wondering what the favorite Thai dishes are of the BMs, and where they like to eat, particularly around Sukhumvit and Nana.

    Daytime?

    Late night?

Street food is often the cheapest and the the best. In my time around Sukhumvit, I have found the food arcade that sets up around Soi 1 offers a variety of decent food at good prices. I am sure there are better spots, let's hear about them!

Not sure what these raamen-like soups were, but they were awesome.

    My favorite Thai dishes:

    1. Pad See-Ew (phat si io)

    2. Khao Pad Goong... or any Khao Pad

    3. Curries

    4. Tom Yum

    5. Lad na

    6. Who doesn't enjoy a good Pad Thai?

    7. Should I try papaya salad?

The nice thing about meeting gurls is that they are hungry esp after boom boom! and they usually know good places to go to replenish their energy! On my last trip, I hooked up with a LB from Isaan and we went to eat at a place she liked, with good Isaan food.

Does anyone remember Ploy from the old GB? Aside from eating each other's goodies, we ate out a couple times at a spot she liked off the beaten path... I want to say it was up around the soi 20's or 30's but a ways off of Sukhumvit definitely on the even number side...

Don't remember what the food was she liked, but it was spicy!

Stayed here recently. The initial review and follow ups pretty much cover it all but I though I'd share some thoughts. I'd stayed at the soi 11 property before so i knew what to expect room wise. Very similar (bathrooms different) but this property is in better condition as you'd expect being newer. Wasn't expecting to have issues with noise as per previous reviews but I was surprised at just how quiet it was given it's location. I stayed in Deluxe room 40 something (1280 b / night) and looked down on DrBJ which made for some interesting people watching.

Friendly staff, secure ID taking process which might be too much hassle for some but I like it. They call when your squeeze leaves but I'd unplugged my phone to stop the bright LED flashing at night so reception came up and checked everything was OK in person...nice touch. Friendly staff, good wifi, DVD player and flat screen TV. One bad point was the useless light above the vanity for shaving...but that's something I've found in probably 80% of places I've stayed in Thailand.

Location location. What a self contained little soi 7/1 is, best money exchange, straight and shonky massage, straight and shonky bars, plenty of food options, Bangkok beat and metres from the BTS. If it had a 7/11 you'd never need to leave it. Until you'd been through the selection next door of course !

So, lets try to give my first review

Located at the head Sukhumvit Soi 10, next to Chuwit Park and TheLollipop1.
A nice and clean hotel, with a small, friendly staff.

Some people found the standard rooms a little small, so I took the Deluxe room.
Control panel next to your bed for light, airco, time etc. Very handy.
Rooms are clean, a big bathroom comparing to the bedroom.
Bath/shower and toilet are diveded by a glass door, so you don't have to wear your boots when you come out of the shower.

    Front

    Room

    Bathroom

Breakfast is very limited (3 choiches), you have to buy that seperate when you're checking in.

Guestfriendly: didn't take anybody up there, but I think so.

Rooms and prices (according to their site)
    Standard - 1500 Bht
    Superior - 1700 Bht
    Deluxe - 1900 Bht
    Suite - 2500 Bht

    Hi,
Can't see any reviews for this so I thought I add one given I stayed here for a couple of nights. I usually stay at the JW mariott as I travel for work and they pay but this time I had to book a room for a couple of night at my own expense. I then moved to the JW Mariott on Soi 2 so it worked out OK... nice to stay at both ends of the magic strip from Soi 4 to Soi 21.

Jasmine is more serviced apartments as opposed to a full hotel but it has a restaurant and a gym and a pool. As far I can see the complex used to be split into the Jasmine Executive Suites and the Jasmine City Hotel and there are still two websites but on Agoda it is all listed under one heading of Jasmine City Hotel.

Location: Just at the junction of Soi 23 and Sukhumvit main road. It's about 100M walk to the Soi Cowboy and 100M to a stairs leading to Asoke BTS, MRT, Terminal 21. Good location for transport and easy to get to and from airport by train.

General impressions: Somewhat confusing layout. It's basically two connected towers where the suites start from Floor 10 up to 30. The lower floors are part of a mall and a car park so you enter it via a very small lobby off the car park entrance where you take the lift to the 10th floor. The 10th floor has the formal lobby where you check in. Depending on which part you are staying in you can also get to your rooms by a choice of three other sets of lifts directly off the car park entrance.

This is the picture off Agoda and you can see the two parts of the complex. The tall tower on the left is Executive Suites and the building on the right is the City Hotel.

Rooms: Room was nice. I booked an Executive Jacuzzi suite because it was on special offer at 2500 Baht (no breakfast) but to be honest it was not worth the extra over the normal deluxe suite which was on offer for 1900 baht. The Executive suite I got was on floor 11 and had a jacuzzi as well as a shower and had more space but in fact the extra space was of no use as you can see from photos. There are other room stypes including proper 1 and 2 bed suites. Prices seem to vary a lot ... I had seen prices ranging from 2000 to 10,000 baht for the same room types over the space of a few days ! I think the recent downturn in tourist travel due to the protests has hit this place so I seem to have booked at a good time.

Bedroom with nice sofa (put to good use ) :

View from bedroom back to entrance. Bathroom has a window into room and you can see the 'living room' with a kitchen in the middle. This extra space was badly laid out. It would be much better to have it incorporated into the bedroom and have a nice couch there with a table.

OUtside on the same floor as the lobby is a smallish swimming pool with a coupe of small terraces around it for sunbathing. The pool area is between the two towers and faces East-West so I bet there is not much sun on the pool in December. This picture was taken at about 11:30AM in mid April :

The Gym is small but good range of equipment and I did not eat in the restaurant as I worked most days and got breakfast in the office.

Guest Friendly : Very much so but if you want the reassurance of a hotel taking a girls ID and checking up with you then this is not the place to stay. If you are the opposite and want somewhere where you can treat your room like your own apartment then I would say it's ideal. You just walk into the car park entrance area and go to one of the sets of lifts and head up. This is based on where I was staying on floor 11 of the City Hotels block. I can't say for certain about the other block but I think its the same. You get a lift and there is no need to stop on the lobby floor..you can go direct to your own floor as long as you use your room keycard.

The place felt almost abandoned it was so quiet and it has a weird layout as regards lifts to rooms. I never saw anyone around after 8PM and I took a few guests back over the few nights I stayed there and we never met a soul. If you can get a good price and like the whole serviced apartment with minimal customer service and staff interaction then it's a good place to stay.

Now that the protest site at Asoke has been dismantled I decided to stay at the Emporium Suites again this time around.

This isn't the first time I'm staying at the Emporium, over the last couple of years it has somewhat become my home away from home. I love the spaciousness of the rooms and the location is perfect for me as it's walking distance from places like Akane in soi 33 where I like to 'relax' during the day after a heavy night of drinking. The fact that the hotel is connected to the mall and the BTS makes it even better for me.

First impression: smallish lobby with some comfy seating areas and a bar. The receptionists are always smiling and upon check in upgraded me from a Studio Deluxe to a One Bedroom Suite.

Location: connected to the Emporium Mall on soi 24 means you can access the mall and the BTS from within and there is no need to go outside; handy during rainy season when it is bucketing down.

Room: nice room, around 90m2, a living room with a comfortable sofa and large flat screen TV, a bedroom with an extremely comfortable king size bed and an OK bathroom with a shower as part of the bath; no rain shower which is a miss in my opinion for a hotel like the Emporium.

Pool/Gym: a good sized pool which gets sun until about 3pm. The gym is large and fully equipped.

Bottomline: I would recommend this hotel for longer stays if your budget allows it. There is free Wifi and the place is totally guest friendly.

    Gents,

For those with a hankering for real deal Japanese while in the Big Mango, I highly recommend Ten Sui on Sukhumvit 16. The restaurant is in its own house with a large courtyard/garden. Step into the property and you feel like you are in Japan. They have regular seating and tatami rooms. Note: this is a high level joint and priced accordingly for some things, but I would match the quality against just about any Japanese I have eaten outside Japan itself.

They cover all the basic Japanese "sub-cuisines" and specialize in Kaizeki and v. fresh sashimi/sushi. Those two will set your wallet back - you are starting at 3000 baht for Kaizeki or 2300 baht for Sashimi for 2 ppl. They are constantly changing the specials with the seasons and the ingredients are of highest quality.

HOWEVER, more staple dishes like assorted tempura (B350), Miso Cod/grilled salmon (B380/280), udon/soba (B250) and others are much more reasonable (relative to Western or Hong Kong prices and even the rising prices in Bangkok HiSo restaurants).

The lunch sets are a great option - starting from 330 baht you have a wide choice of lots of very good and very filling lunch sets.

As a high end place slacks, shoes, collared shirt are necessary.

As a comparison, I would rate this place far higher than the Japanese in JW Marriott (Tsu & Nami) at similar or lower pricing levels.

See the very extensive menu at their website: http://www.tensui.co/

    Youngone got a reaction from hughjass85 in G's Bangkok-Patpong 2
When I plan a night out in Patpong, I typically kick it off with a dinner at G's in Patpong soi 2, adjacent to Foodland. G's was started 2 years ago by Guido, a German chef who has been in Thailand for about 17 years and who used to be the GM of Livingstone's Lodge in soi 33, nowadays called Ocean Bangkok. On a side note, Guido was quite well know in Germany before he made the move to Thailand as he had his own cooking show on TV in the 90's.

The place is quite small, probably about 10-12 tables and serves German food as well as Thai food, but obviously with Guido being German the emphasis lies on German food and drink. There are around 30 specialty German beers on stock as well as a number of great schnapps bottles. The food is the typical German robust type, with portions that could feed half a family. Before ordering you get some home made bread and good garlic butter, which is not always easy to find in Bangkok, and Guido talks you through the menu and specialties of the day. Main dishes vary in price between 200 Baht for Curry sausages to 450 Baht for excellent Pepper Schnitzels or Caper Meatballs , so a visit won't exactly break the bank...

Guido himself is quite a colourful character who'll entertain you with some of his political views and Thai experiences from the last 17 years. He's not a LB lover per se, instead he's a regular in Silom soi 4 and connoisseur of Thai boys; it's always a parade of characters visiting the restaurant every time I visit down there.

The place definitely gets a thumbs up from me when it comes to the food as well as for the 'value for money' factor.

Due to the protest site at Asoke I decided to stay at the JW Marriott this time around instead of the Emporium Suites which is my usual haunt these days. The protest site is actually very quiet, but it makes the late night taxi journey from Nana to Phrom Phong a bit of a pain the ass, hence the decision to change for this trip.

This isn't the first time I'm staying at the JW Marriott, it used to be one of my favourite places to stay in BKK until I got tired of paying a lot of money for rooms that are nice but need a bit of upgrading. What speaks for the JW is the near perfect location, a 2 minute stroll from the hustle and bustle of Nana, and its extreme tolerance to guests, be it LB or GG; not an eye is blinked by security and there is no need to leave ID's at the reception.

First impression: huge lobby with some comfy seating areas and a bar. The hotel had arranged a driver to pick me up from the airport and about 10 minutes before getting to the hotel he rang reception so that everything was ready for a speedy check in; nice touch I thought. The AC in the room was on when I got there, which always makes for a pleasant entry,

Location: right on soi 2 in spitting distance of Guess Bar, NEP and Check In bar. Plenty of restaurants, coffee shops around the hotel as well as a 7/11 make for easy pickings if you're hungry or thirsty. The closest BTS is Phloenchit, which is about a 5 minute walk.

Room: nice room, around 65m2, a living room with a comfortable sofa and large flat screen TV, a bedroom with an extremely comfortable king size bed and an OK bathroom with a shower cabin separated from the bath; no rain shower which is a miss in my opinion for a hotel like the JW. The best for me was the fact that there was absolutely 0 noise around and the curtains blocked off all sunlight. For a light sleeper who is sensitive to light like myself this is perfect...

Pool/Gym: a good sized pool which gets sun until about 3pm. The Spa and sauna/shower facility is truly great, but the massages are way over priced as far as I'm concerned.

Bottomline: I would recommend this hotel for shorter stays if your budget allows it. I found all other aspects of the place perfect, including very fast and reliable wireless internet ( I'm a Marriott Gold member, so get that for free, not sure if it's charged otherwise). It's totally Guestfriendly for LB's and GG's alike.

I stayed there once a few years back when they had just opened. Good sized rooms in a good location and definitely guest friendly, but for me there were 2 negatives which have prevented me from staying there again: the wifi was very slow and the TV channels were aimed at an Arab audience which is understandable as the majority of guests were from that part of the world at the time, but left me only with CNN & BBC. Maybe these things have changed now though...

I noticed the sign for this place on street view so I had a look at their website : http://www.shama.com/sukhumvit/

The location is on the same street as the Majestic Grande but closer towards Sukhumvit.

The rooms look nice and are priced well compared to some I have looked at. At the moment a one bedroom apartment (66 square metres) costs AUD$86/ $101 night. When you compare that price with Majestic and take into account the better pool, gym and bigger room with kitchen this place starts looking pretty good IMO.

Youngone got a reaction from hughjass85 in Octave rooftop bar at the marriot hotel on Soi 57
I've been to Octave only twice and found it an enjoyable relaxing kind of place. I didn't see any LB's the times I was there, but would guess they are LB friendly as all Marriott's are in my experience. An easier place to get to and just as nice is Above Eleven at the Fraser Suites on soi 11, more or less just behind the Q Bar.
