Last Monday I took one of my LB friends out for an early dinner, as it was her birthday.

She is from Trang, which is in the South of Thailand, so I thought it would be nice to take her to a restaurant that specialises in Southern Thai cuisine (spicy!).

Prai Raya is located in a house at the far end of Soi 8, on the left hand side, if walking from Sukhumvit. It is a bit before the Citadines hotel.

I had been there before pre-Covid and remembered that it was very good.

It was about 1/3 full at 1800 on a Monday night, so if you visit at a weekend, its probably best to make a booking.

The restaurant is very big, and probably seats 150+ in all of the various rooms.

I let the LB do all of the selections and she mainly stuck to the specialities at the front of the menu.

Service was excellent and so was the grub. I think we ended up with 5 different dishes. Two were volcanic, as to be expected, and three could be enjoyed by myself.

Would I recommend it? Yes for sure!

Southern Thai food has a well-deserved reputation for being the spiciest food of all the Thai regions, but there was plenty available for farang tastes also. Its a very nice place and the bill came to about 1,800 all in. I thought it was very good value.

If you visit on a birthday and pay by cash they will even give you a 5% discount!

Apologies, there are no photos, as I had left my phone at home and my companion must be the only LB in the universe that doesn't take photos of what she is eating!

Her summary was very that it was authentic and she really enjoyed all the different dishes. She gave it an 8/10 and as 99% of the guests were Thai, I think the place has a very good reputation amongst the locals.

    The face book page is:

This is great. Could you kindly tell me what you ordered??

I just checked it out. It's certainly not cheap.

I've just booked the Raddison (soi 13?) for my 4 nights in Jan. Will be my first time there.

Yes you’re right. It is soi 13.

I checked it in October in preparation for my next 10 day stay in 3 months. I was happy with what I saw. Good rooms, good breakfast among other things. Its just that the walk to the BTS is a pain.
    Looking forward though.
    lemme know how yours went.

    cheers

To be higher, you may have to buy a fancier room. They put the fancy ones on top.

Another upside down hotel map in Thailand. It makes me crazy, and it makes a difference.

The location is great for Cindy's. That works for me. I will look at this one next trip.

Well I did have the Executive, their biggest in size. But like I said, the street noise wasn’t that bad.
Cindy’s was actually why I got it. It is super for Cindy’s without breaking the bank.

i have booked Radisson Suites on soi 15, in early 2025.

  4. Well the rates are certainly on the rise. I no longer stay at my go-to as I no longer can afford their rates. All I do now is check rates on Agoda as frequently as I can just to have a idea and make tentative bookings when the rates go down.

Bangkok ain't what it used to be.

  5. I’d ask you guys to give Bangkok Burgers go. It is at the top of soi 11, just a you come in from Sukhumvit, next to the 7/11 (141 Soi Sukhumvit 11, Khlong Toei Nuea, Watthana). The burgers are cheap and pretty good.
most of all, they serve good Thai food on the top floor. I really enjoyed their Tom yom goong, particularly prawns, tamarind prawns and other dishes. The Tom yum came with a good number of fairly large prawns, fresh too and the soup was just glorius. I must have eaten there 3 or 4 times. Although on the top floor, there is an open air area where tenants (also a dorm/hotel of some kind) where guests smoke cannabis. The smell is excruciating. Especially when you’re trying to enjoy your food.

I finally made it there this afternoon for the 4pm opening. It was in the top 3 Thai meals I’ve ever had, and I’ve lived here for 6 years. I had the crab fried rice and the stir fried cabbage. Both were just fantastic! Got there about 3:35 and was second in line.

Thanks much to @Danum99 for the recommendation!!

Hey I'm glad you did. Try my recommendations the next time around.

I already called them for reservations for my visit in October.

I have taken over the Why Not Bar photos management and so need to find user friendly watermarking software.

Can anyone recommend software that can be used to add the Why Not Bar logo to the photos that get posted on their thread?

    Requirements are:

The software needs to be a free edition.

    User-friendly

Does not require the software company's logo to also be watermarked onto the photo

Can handle bulk photos, not just individual pictures.

Runs on a PC, not a smartphone app.

There appears to be 101 different vendors selling these applications, so I am looking for any recommendations from BMs who have experience with this.

Thanks very much for any suggestions.

    Hey there @SAGuy.

When I used them many years ago, I used an ONLINE version called "iloveimg.com'. And I just checked and they are still there.

There's nothing to download and there's a free version too but limited usage. We paid a few dollars a month, for the premium pkg when there was a need to use the service repeatedly. I don't know the full details of using it as one of the clerks did the work, but I do know that it is easy to do it.

There are many others if you require the work to be done 'in-house" but, as you said, there a software requirement.

    Hope this helps.

So you're doing photo editing for whynot? Don't you have enough work to do?

  8. hey there @Rodrigo,

    hey there buddy,

i am in bkok in oct this year and am booked at radisson suites. first stay at 29,000B. then i read 'I stay in soi 11, I stay in Citadines as the rooms are fairly spacious and the crowd who stay there is not that bad' and i checked the rates and it seemed like a better proposition ( i have been retired for some time and with no income, i need to perhaps look at alternatives). i was just wondering whether you could spare me a line or two about citadines 11. the rate is really attractive and some words would convince me to change.

i am fussy about cleanliness, esp daily housekeeping. and i think you may have inferred that the area is safe (i am an old man).

i am also looking at reviews to help.

    thank you in advance.

What is the cost for 15 day tourist sim?  Since I arrive on Sunday, I have just enough cash to get to hotel plus a few bucks.  Have to wait until Monday to hit up vasu

15 day sim could cost about 800B.
I usually pay 500B for roughly 12 days.

Thanks for this review. I walked there from Elkamai BTS once, but the queue was so long I didn’t bother waiting. Will have to try again some time as it has great reviews.

You should. It is a worthwhile wait.

the other consideration is to try and get their Line contact. It is readily available on their social media posts. I started bugging them for reservations 2 months before I left for Bangkok and they finally gave in.

before this it was usually ordering through Grabfood.

  11. Maitria is close to both the MRT & BTS stations, roughly 650m, so this is always a good thing and it is something I always lookout for. The walk to trains is comfortable and fast.

I have been with Adelphi Grande for the past 7 years (roughly 2 visits a year) and have been comfortable with them. Unfortunately, staff turnover is very high so that’s a negative. Before that it was Parchara Suites on soi 6 (now Parkroyal).

The people at Maitria are good. Well most of them.
Housekeeping is spot on, and this is very high on my list. I never fail to see housekeeping, already cleaning rooms when I leave at 930am.

Breakfast was a little sparse (although coffee was good), but I guess that is to be expected at this price point.
There is a small laundrette in the basement, which is a useful feature to have.

The room layout is awkward, and furniture placement makes it very difficult to move around and be comfortable. So this was a negative for me. Not something I’d care to repeat.
The bed was spectacular, one of the better features in the room but I just wished the WiFi connection was better.
I booked the studio grand deluxe, 2,600B nett per day, with breakfast.

I had planned. 2 week stay with them but I came down with Bronchitis while on a food binge in Yaowarat on the 2nd day. Doctors on the 3rd day, and I got a flight back home on the 4th day. All my plans, down the drain!!! Ah! Well.
