Crystal Grill @floor82
Genghis replied to shaved_penis79's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
I haven't tried it but as a rule I'd avoid buffets (especially at lower prices) in tourist places like that. There's always better food nearby in Bangkok and I tend not to trust buffets like that for hygiene either. Obviously, if you really wanna to go to the observation deck and are hungry it might have uses but it's not something I'd recommend to my friends who visit Bangkok. -
Burmese Food in Sukhumvit
Genghis replied to sydney69er's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
I was going to write up the usual long and rambling post about Burmese food in Bangkok as it's something that I've really started to like eating recently but I'm both busy and feeling lazy today. Anyway, instead of writing too much I thought it would be easier just to post a YouTube video from a guy who has done several guides to Burmese food in BKK and they have helped me find this stuff. I will call out one place though that isn't on the video. The restaurant is Feel Myanmar (in Pratunam but worth the short trip) and it's probably my favourite Burmese restaurant. I eat here whenever possible even if it means coming up with an excuse to drag the Mrs to this part of town and then say "we may as well eat here again". https://maps.app.goo.gl/t1t2HT3kfpLCNKoTA As @MarkSussex mentioned earlier Burbrit on Soi 22 is a good place. It's a Burmese/British craft beer bar that serves some decent Burmese food as well as the usual bar food so could be a good first introduction to anyone curious about trying this type of food. The beers are good, the staff are nice and the happy hour is pretty long for anyone looking for a cheap option. https://maps.app.goo.gl/rzhn8WDrNPV8L7Mw7 -

Yup. I like it too. Good beers and food, including some Burmese options. Nice staff as well. -

Great recommendation. I'll try this out, thanks. Burmese food is delicious and has become a favourite of mine over the last few years and there seems to be restaurants popping up all over Bangkok, probably due to the war in Myanmar. For anyone who hasn't tried Burmese food yet, I thoroughly recommend it. I'll add a few other recommendations here after watching the football, including a Burmese craft beer bar/restaurant that could be a decent introduction to anyone curious about trying that type of food the first time. -
After a while there's only so much we can do to avoid being sick, especially if one of the focus of your trips is having as much sex as possible. Good luck staying well on your next trip Steve but most of all I hope you have a lot of fun and made plenty of excellent memories even though that means we have to take the bad along with the good occasionally.

This might be an unpopular suggestion but one of my rules for staying healthy while travelling is to avoid hotel buffet breakfasts. Fresh cooked eggs are the one exception I occasionally make but otherwise I just steer clear. I've been sick more from hotel breakfasts than eating local food as long as I use common sense of eating freshly cooked food at busy places that locals eat at too. I don't really eat much farang food these days in Thailand and am sick much less frequently but that's because I am very selective with which local food I go for. I always make sure it's cooked fresh even then, never go for the pre-cooked kebabs or sausages etc. On longer trips to Thailand I'm a bit less paranoid about where I can eat due to having adjusted and have no worries about eating at good khao gaeng places where the food is cooked in advance. However it has to be a good and busy place where the food doesn't last long. I certainly wouldn't do that at a random place. One other thing: despite being a seafood lover I often have to avoid seafood as I'm not sure it's fresh or handled well. I only eat seafood in places that are busy, know what they're doing and you know that they will not be keeping seafood overnight etc. That comes from painful experience of some of the worst types of food poisoning. As Taas said water is the key thing to watch out for. On shorter trips to Thailand (before I've adjusted and probably got sick in the process) I'm even very cautious about accidentally drinking water from showers and baths even though both are awkward if shared with a LB though.

Song Wat Week festival 20-23 November
Genghis posted a topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
If anyone is currently visiting Bangkok and would like to take advantage of the refreshing cooler weather to go exploring BKK in the daytime this might be a good option. The Song Wat festival is running over the next 3 days from 11.00-21.00 but the bars will be busy after that of course. This is a perfect opportunity to explore what has to be the coolest part of Bangkok right now. To get to Song Wat you just need to either catch the MRT to Wat Mangkon and walk 5 mins through Yaowarat or get off a boat at Ratchawong pier and that drops you just a few steps from Song Wat Road. Here's the location of one of the good bars in the middle of this neighborhood just in case you want to find your way there. https://maps.app.goo.gl/9nPenexAGgyBQHx47 The Song Wat neighbourhood is a small area between Chinatown/Yaowarat and the river. It has an interesting blend of attractive buildings mixed with street art and funky galleries spilling out onto the streets. Exploring this neighborhood on foot can be very rewarding with hidden surprises down nearly all the back alleys so it can easily take an afternoon. It's one of the most beautiful and interesting parts of the city, definitely somewhere that would appeal to any photographers out there too as there's a lot to see. There are so many excellent food options and some very funky bars in Song Wat but rather than give an extensive list right now I'd just suggest going to the festival and eating or drinking wherever appeals as it's all likely to be good and you might just prefer to enjoy what's happening on the streets for the festival at the time you're there. However I would recommend sitting at one of the riverside bars such as Barbon at sunset to enjoy the beautiful views if you're visiting for a first time. If any of you do decide to pay a visit to Song Wat over the next few days for the festival please feel free to message me for any specific recommendations as I know the area very well, it's one of my favourite parts of Bangkok. Edit: One more thing, this would make an excellent place to go with a LB date and make her happy, even if she doesn't know the place herself she'll recognise bits from her social media. Unfortunately that means she'll also inevitably want a lot of pictures taken in the same places but that would keep any LB happy as would all the excellent food in the area and it's an easy way to have a day out together. It's not an expensive option either. -
Song Wat Week festival 20-23 November

That place is really good. I fully recommend it. If you like that type of old school Thai Chinese food and you're in the Song Wat area I'd also strongly recommend Urai Braised Goose and Lim Lao Sar Fishball Noodles. They've both been there for decades and for good reason, they're the best in the city for their particular specialities. Urai Braised Goose: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jFvdcmx8r4FQqzkc8 Lim Lao Sar: https://maps.app.goo.gl/2yWjvinUUTp72FYq7 There's loads of other good options in the area as well. Those 3 probably aren't even my personal favourites (that said, I like all 3 and some days find myself craving them specifically also the Mrs loves the goose and fishball places in particular) but they're pretty famous and deservedly so. Anyway, they are well worth a visit but so are a lot of places in that part of town in my opinion. All 3 of those places are very popular, the braised goose one on particular so good luck if you are trying that during the festival. We normally queue up well in advance to book our goose for later before they sell out. -
I'm Aroi, Sukhumvit Soi 11
Genghis replied to SAGuy's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
This has to be my nomination for the thread that has veered most wildly off course in 2025. Great work everyone. Keep it up -
Welcome aboard. The first post is always the most difficult for long time lurkers and it's never too late to stop. I hope you get to visit Thailand soon, it's better than you can imagine just from reading the forum.

I'm guessing he stapled them together to make it easier when attaching them to the carrier pigeon's leg.

SW1 Market next door to the Times Square Building on Sukhumvit Road
Genghis replied to SAGuy's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
Sorry if that came across as unnecessarily grumpy. Only an idiot like me chooses to arrive in Bangkok on a day when there is no alcohol being sold. It's made worse by me making sure I had enough spare time to go out for a sneaky beer before seeing the in-laws. -
SW1 Market next door to the Times Square Building on Sukhumvit Road
Genghis replied to SAGuy's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
It looks like it could be a good place for a quick break when moving between the LB bars with that location. The old Art Box was a fun place. I was surprised when they tore it down due to it's popularity but that's typical for Bangkok really when the developers want to build another hotel or block of condos. Hopefully this market can last longer. -
Cheapish Japanese on Soi 24
Genghis replied to sydney69er's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
Thanks for this. I love the Japanese restaurants off Sukhumvit between Phrom Phong and Ekkamai. They can offer excellent value and there's also some good little bars as well as enough different types of p4p options to keep us deviants busy. I'm not going to recommend any specific Japanese places just yet as I'll soon be back in Thonglor surrounded by those places so will have up to date information however there's one but of information I'll add to update a previous post of mine about Japanese restaurants in this area. In this thread about Japanese Izakayas I sneaked in a recommendation for one of my favourite cheap Japanese places. It's called Unatoto and specialises in grilled eel dishes at very good prices for big portions of delicious food. I was really disappointed to read that it closed down 2 weeks ago before I could visit again to stuff my face (it's a place that makes me go into a feeding frenzy sometimes where I order a very optimistic quantity of food and somehow finish it every time). The good news is that they've now relocated to the new Dusit Central Park which looks pretty fucking impressive to me anyway so I'll definitely have another reason to check out those awesome views a few times now. If that eel restaurant Unatoto is as good as in the old location my Mrs might soon get bored of me pretending to want to do daily romantic strolls in the park. As a quick tangent if any visitors or BMs haven't seen the new Dusit Central Park roof garden it's worth checking out, it looks pretty spectacular and it's free. The park is easily reachable from Nana as it's linked to Sala Daeng BTS. -
I'm not really sure whether it's worth me making a recommendation for this place here due it not being in Lower Sukhumvit so it'll be inconvenient for people staying in the mongering epicentre. However, it's just a short walk from Saphan Thaksin BTS and would be very convenient if people are heading towards the riverfront and major tourist attractions in that part of town. It's also worth the short trip on the train if you wanted to eat something outstanding at low prices before exploring somewhere different. My real reason for recommending this place is that I'm getting very close to my next trip to Bangkok and both my Mrs and myself are craving a meal here. I think she might even be looking forward to it more than done of the excellent food her mother cooks so it's highly recommended by us both. Anyway, Amin Biryani is quite a famous place in it's own way. It was open for decades in a different location but has now relocated since COVID caused it to close. The food is Southern Thai Muslim food with amazing biryanis and curries. The food is unusually spiced for a lot of Thai food but avoids being extremely hot from chillies so would be accessible to most farang, especially those who like good Indian food as there are some similarities while remaining noticeably Thai. Another reason for me recommending this place now is that the (often irritating but still very popular) youtuber Mark Wiens has recently done a video here. That can be good and bad in my opinion. I like to see them get exposure from a very successful media source but hopefully it doesn't result in it becoming too popular causing it to raise prices, lower standards or both. If you fancy trying out one of my favourite street food places anywhere in Thailand (while it's still cheap and has excellent standards) I can't recommend this place highly enough. Easily in my top 10 cheap eats in Bangkok. Amin Biryani is located here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/RD1VKwxLDL3ZsGx26 Apologies for posting one of his videos but it gives a good overview of the food if you skip through his gurning at the camera.

Judging by your username I'll give that a go to as a recommendation. My yum cha love first began in Sydney and it'll always be something I associate with living there.
-
The only thing that makes it in any way bearable for me when he does that is the certain knowledge that deep down he regrets ever having started doing that stupid face and how much he must hate having to still do it every time.
-
Thanks for the tip, I'll give that a try for sure. My favourite cheap Yum Cha place is called Tuang but at those prices in Little Dragon I'm going to have to investigate even if already full from all the other temptations nearby. If you haven't tried Tuang I'd recommend it highly btw, It's a casual place that's owned by a guy that was previously the top chef in a really posh Chinese hotel and you can see the quality without paying through the nose for it. It's located just behind Asiatique (that's somewhere that I am not a fan of generally BTW). https://maps.app.goo.gl/ckLnA33trsGeENmW9

100% agreed on Jack's Bar for a few drinks or some food on this neighborhood with a fantastic view but with good prices. https://maps.app.goo.gl/XL922mGSHVEpFN197

Maybe I could do that but I'm very conscious of the fact that most BMs don't want to or simply don't have time to leave the prime LB hunting ground for food. The same thing was often true for me on my mongering visits. Also, I'm not sure how many BMs would be interested in trying out local food so much anyway but if there's interest I could give more recommendations. Apologies to those who aren't interested of course. It's quite funny and maybe tragic for me to think of the change from when I was single and travelling to Bangkok at least partly for mongering. The final day or two before leaving and especially the moments between landing and getting to the hotel would be filled with me thinking which girl(s) I'm going for first if possible. Nowadays before my recent trips I'm thinking about where to eat and which bars I'll be going to instead. Admittedly my craving for a biryani at Amin's isn't close to my craving for a LT with Gina or Ploy when Thailand was reopening after COVID but still I'm quite hungry.

Bars with live Rock or Metal music - Bangkok
Genghis replied to shaved_penis79's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
There's the Rock Pub in Phaya Thai near the BTS so it's just a short trip from Nana. It seems to have a good reputation and I know people that go there occasionally. I think they regularly have bands on as I've walked past a lot when living nearby in Ari. My experience is limited to popping in for a beer or two one day to get out of the rain and just to have a look around. Not my kind of music so didn't hang around and can't say more than that. There's Speakerbox in Thonglor too. That's a good live music bar but it generally tends more to the Indie end of the spectrum with occasional bands that might appeal to a metal fan. Check it out online maybe and they might have something you like coming up. Places like Hilary's on Soi 4 who have cover bands often focus more on classic rock stuff of course and are always a good place to have a drink. -
Travelling to Bangkok in low season
Genghis replied to shaved_penis79's topic in Transport and Travel
July is right in the middle of low season so might suit your needs. July is in the rainy season. While it's generally not as rainy as September you'll probably get rain at some point most days. Most of the downpours will be brief and quickly forgotten once the sun comes back out. I personally always enjoyed visiting during the rainy season as much as any other time - it actually has quite a few advantages so some people prefer it. There is never a bad season to go to Thailand, if you go there with some money and a positive attitude you can always have a lot of fun. -
As SAGuy said it's cheap and consistently good. Don't expect it to be the best Thai food around in Bangkok but it's perfectly located and priced for a night mongering on that side of Sukhumvit. I'd say that it's a similar level for price and reliably good food to Krua Khun Puk on the corner of Sois 11 and 11/1 which would make for a solid and convenient option if heading to the Soi 11 bars or staggering back to the hotel afterwards as it's open very late.
-
Ok that's great as I'll be back over in early October and can make sure any lists are up to date. It also means I can focus on enjoying my mini break in Istanbul this week without thinking about Thailand - which is a healthy state of affairs for me as I'm currently dealing with builders and the related stress back there.
-
Ok, I'll write something up for you. When do you head over that way? Anything in particular you're looking for? Any food preferences too?
