I'm Aroi, Sukhumvit Soi 11
Genghis replied to SAGuy's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
This has to be my nomination for the thread that has veered most wildly off course in 2025. Great work everyone. Keep it up -
Welcome aboard. The first post is always the most difficult for long time lurkers and it's never too late to stop. I hope you get to visit Thailand soon, it's better than you can imagine just from reading the forum.

I'm guessing he stapled them together to make it easier when attaching them to the carrier pigeon's leg.

SW1 Market next door to the Times Square Building on Sukhumvit Road
Genghis replied to SAGuy's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
Sorry if that came across as unnecessarily grumpy. Only an idiot like me chooses to arrive in Bangkok on a day when there is no alcohol being sold. It's made worse by me making sure I had enough spare time to go out for a sneaky beer before seeing the in-laws. -
SW1 Market next door to the Times Square Building on Sukhumvit Road

It looks like it could be a good place for a quick break when moving between the LB bars with that location. The old Art Box was a fun place. I was surprised when they tore it down due to it's popularity but that's typical for Bangkok really when the developers want to build another hotel or block of condos. Hopefully this market can last longer. -
Cheapish Japanese on Soi 24
Genghis replied to sydney69er's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
Thanks for this. I love the Japanese restaurants off Sukhumvit between Phrom Phong and Ekkamai. They can offer excellent value and there's also some good little bars as well as enough different types of p4p options to keep us deviants busy. I'm not going to recommend any specific Japanese places just yet as I'll soon be back in Thonglor surrounded by those places so will have up to date information however there's one but of information I'll add to update a previous post of mine about Japanese restaurants in this area. In this thread about Japanese Izakayas I sneaked in a recommendation for one of my favourite cheap Japanese places. It's called Unatoto and specialises in grilled eel dishes at very good prices for big portions of delicious food. I was really disappointed to read that it closed down 2 weeks ago before I could visit again to stuff my face (it's a place that makes me go into a feeding frenzy sometimes where I order a very optimistic quantity of food and somehow finish it every time). The good news is that they've now relocated to the new Dusit Central Park which looks pretty fucking impressive to me anyway so I'll definitely have another reason to check out those awesome views a few times now. If that eel restaurant Unatoto is as good as in the old location my Mrs might soon get bored of me pretending to want to do daily romantic strolls in the park. As a quick tangent if any visitors or BMs haven't seen the new Dusit Central Park roof garden it's worth checking out, it looks pretty spectacular and it's free. The park is easily reachable from Nana as it's linked to Sala Daeng BTS. -
Judging by your username I'll give that a go to as a recommendation. My yum cha love first began in Sydney and it'll always be something I associate with living there.

The only thing that makes it in any way bearable for me when he does that is the certain knowledge that deep down he regrets ever having started doing that stupid face and how much he must hate having to still do it every time.

Thanks for the tip, I'll give that a try for sure. My favourite cheap Yum Cha place is called Tuang but at those prices in Little Dragon I'm going to have to investigate even if already full from all the other temptations nearby. If you haven't tried Tuang I'd recommend it highly btw, It's a casual place that's owned by a guy that was previously the top chef in a really posh Chinese hotel and you can see the quality without paying through the nose for it. It's located just behind Asiatique (that's somewhere that I am not a fan of generally BTW). https://maps.app.goo.gl/ckLnA33trsGeENmW9

100% agreed on Jack's Bar for a few drinks or some food on this neighborhood with a fantastic view but with good prices. https://maps.app.goo.gl/XL922mGSHVEpFN197

Maybe I could do that but I'm very conscious of the fact that most BMs don't want to or simply don't have time to leave the prime LB hunting ground for food. The same thing was often true for me on my mongering visits. Also, I'm not sure how many BMs would be interested in trying out local food so much anyway but if there's interest I could give more recommendations. Apologies to those who aren't interested of course. It's quite funny and maybe tragic for me to think of the change from when I was single and travelling to Bangkok at least partly for mongering. The final day or two before leaving and especially the moments between landing and getting to the hotel would be filled with me thinking which girl(s) I'm going for first if possible. Nowadays before my recent trips I'm thinking about where to eat and which bars I'll be going to instead. Admittedly my craving for a biryani at Amin's isn't close to my craving for a LT with Gina or Ploy when Thailand was reopening after COVID but still I'm quite hungry.

I'm not really sure whether it's worth me making a recommendation for this place here due it not being in Lower Sukhumvit so it'll be inconvenient for people staying in the mongering epicentre. However, it's just a short walk from Saphan Thaksin BTS and would be very convenient if people are heading towards the riverfront and major tourist attractions in that part of town. It's also worth the short trip on the train if you wanted to eat something outstanding at low prices before exploring somewhere different. My real reason for recommending this place is that I'm getting very close to my next trip to Bangkok and both my Mrs and myself are craving a meal here. I think she might even be looking forward to it more than done of the excellent food her mother cooks so it's highly recommended by us both. Anyway, Amin Biryani is quite a famous place in it's own way. It was open for decades in a different location but has now relocated since COVID caused it to close. The food is Southern Thai Muslim food with amazing biryanis and curries. The food is unusually spiced for a lot of Thai food but avoids being extremely hot from chillies so would be accessible to most farang, especially those who like good Indian food as there are some similarities while remaining noticeably Thai. Another reason for me recommending this place now is that the (often irritating but still very popular) youtuber Mark Wiens has recently done a video here. That can be good and bad in my opinion. I like to see them get exposure from a very successful media source but hopefully it doesn't result in it becoming too popular causing it to raise prices, lower standards or both. If you fancy trying out one of my favourite street food places anywhere in Thailand (while it's still cheap and has excellent standards) I can't recommend this place highly enough. Easily in my top 10 cheap eats in Bangkok. Amin Biryani is located here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/RD1VKwxLDL3ZsGx26 Apologies for posting one of his videos but it gives a good overview of the food if you skip through his gurning at the camera.

Bars with live Rock or Metal music - Bangkok
Genghis replied to shaved_penis79's topic in Restaurants, Places to Eat and nightlife
There's the Rock Pub in Phaya Thai near the BTS so it's just a short trip from Nana. It seems to have a good reputation and I know people that go there occasionally. I think they regularly have bands on as I've walked past a lot when living nearby in Ari. My experience is limited to popping in for a beer or two one day to get out of the rain and just to have a look around. Not my kind of music so didn't hang around and can't say more than that. There's Speakerbox in Thonglor too. That's a good live music bar but it generally tends more to the Indie end of the spectrum with occasional bands that might appeal to a metal fan. Check it out online maybe and they might have something you like coming up. Places like Hilary's on Soi 4 who have cover bands often focus more on classic rock stuff of course and are always a good place to have a drink. -
Travelling to Bangkok in low season
Genghis replied to shaved_penis79's topic in Transport and Travel
July is right in the middle of low season so might suit your needs. July is in the rainy season. While it's generally not as rainy as September you'll probably get rain at some point most days. Most of the downpours will be brief and quickly forgotten once the sun comes back out. I personally always enjoyed visiting during the rainy season as much as any other time - it actually has quite a few advantages so some people prefer it. There is never a bad season to go to Thailand, if you go there with some money and a positive attitude you can always have a lot of fun. -
As SAGuy said it's cheap and consistently good. Don't expect it to be the best Thai food around in Bangkok but it's perfectly located and priced for a night mongering on that side of Sukhumvit. I'd say that it's a similar level for price and reliably good food to Krua Khun Puk on the corner of Sois 11 and 11/1 which would make for a solid and convenient option if heading to the Soi 11 bars or staggering back to the hotel afterwards as it's open very late.
