    Majestic Grande (updated 2014)

Majestic Grande is taking the steep rate path.... You can't book a room for less than 4000baht now, breakfast included. Sometime even on pre-payment terms. Taking into account it was a bit less than 3000 a few years ago, you wonder if its success (often fully booked, often by good spenders as Arab families) is a reason for this high price policy. Gonna be there in a few days, but for a short September trip (2 nights) I might try Nana Hotel, aka Jurassic Park. I tried it on a daytime booking (1400 was its rate...not bad for ten hours lay over) I ain't a cheap Charlie, but not strictly needing overpricing.

which hotel to choose in bangkok?

Difficult what? There are hundreds guys going in nana Área and pick Up girls and LB. What are You afraid Of? That somebody (Who? What does he do in The same Área ad You, full Of Hookers..) recognises You? Dont be paranoid, Just go and hunt. Nobody will bother to look at you. 1000baht a night? Try coffee and Bean, nearly opposite hahanrans pub in soi 4, but dont expect a large room. Nana hotel has larger rooms on 1400/1600 bahts.

Thailand has been downgraded by the FAA

perfect summary! As any "governmental" agency, they are both asked to be efficient and profitable (at least show they are, as most likely they still suck public funds from tax payers). So they sell services on competing basis...

Thailand has been downgraded by the FAA

agree... With all respect for any forum or posters, I don't think thaivisa, for instance, has the authority to be taken as an official information.I had a dispute somewhere else claiming a certain airline had poor safety records as not listed in website listing safety approved airlines (what that could ever be, btw). The website was not an authority one but a sort of forum on aviation. In addition that list was dated November 2004: the airline we were debating on was established December 2004!!! Quite tough to be listed if you don't exist yet! Fact was that that guy had a negative opinion on that airline based on a "no-fact" and not on official website. Rumours tend to become facts through the web.

Thailand has been downgraded by the FAA

thai Airways has stopped flying To USA and that is fine, But the ban, till lifted, prevents them from flying If "tomorrow" they decide to fly again to USA.It is also enforced on any Thai registered plane, as general aviation or cargo. So it is still a nuisance, minor as I don't think many others Thai planes fly into USA.

Thailand has been downgraded by the FAA

thai is delaying the delivery of quite some A350 they purchased earlier. They are struggling to use the 380 in European routes due to the low LF
  11. hooters is in a by far better location between two.Mexican doesnt benefit of the pass by Tourist. Who goes in that alley other than the majestic grande guests, the annie's soap Customer and those having chose non a couple of the other soi 2 Hotels? Hooters has the privilege to cater for the "rail lurkers" (as long as they allow that type of customer, depending mainly on the revenue they generate), the occasional passer by heading further deep into Soi 4, the Tourists (single, couples, families) visiting that portion (and I mean that portion only) of Nana area like one visits a landmark mentioned in a guide. Those who wants to see nana, don't dare or can't admit to do so, lurking the scene, undecided whether passing under the "Nana Plaza" arch and enter the adult funfair. Repeats? I don think so. The nana "residents", ie those capable of repeats, are not tuned to a place like hooters. It is a different range and either they will not be comfortable to spend time aside the vanilla tourist or these are not comfortable to rub shoulders with the punters. Either hooters will fail or nana will turn into Silom, a soft core RLD. Some signs are already there with the added legitimate tourist around.
  12. chili con carne should usually be a generous portion. If it fails To be so, it is a bad sign.... Hookers, The mexican... All high priced venues for The Área. Two options: The Área Will change into high level Or those two Places Will fail miserably
  13. Dont think this place is comparable with the nearby cheap joints. Regardless of prices offers a nice alternative in the Soi 4 area, with no need to walk to Soi 11 or so. Bad or good it is for us, I think it contributes to a new look of Soi 4, albeit being sideways. Let's say less mongering. Just as hooters does. I don't think they will be patronised by the orphanes of paradise and golden bar. Needs to attract customers and the location is not much ideal to catch passer byes, other than majestic grande guests or people just off Annie's. I believe they have to invest in marketing

  16. dav662, your point is my point as far as the alleged "U.S." job loss due to the predominance of Gulf carriers, it is quite debatable. a) many cockpit crews are not Gulf nationals (just very few of them at present times) That means Gulf carriers created jobs for european, australian, american, southamerican and M.E. pilots. b) same (even more) for the cabin crew, where you can easily find 20 nationalities on board (especially in the case of the 380 who has alrge crew) - again, job opportunities for people who losts jobs before the ME carrier became predominant (just think at the Qantas redudancies made) c) lots of ground staff at every destination worldwide plus foreign ground stuff in their home base. d) hotels and acillaries services for the crew' lay over e) ground services (a plane requires the same ground handler be it local or be it coming from abroad) f) the positive influence given to the industry as the Glf carriers became strong buyers of Airbus and Boeing planes (some will object the tax payers contrinbuting to the low prices of the industry... but this has not much to do with the predominance of a carrier. I do not see much difference for the tax payer to fund Boeing production whether the plane is then bought by Emirates or by United... Some will object the "funding" helps the foreign carriers to "kill" the domestic ones, well.. see points a+b+c+d There might be some job loss in blue collars at the carrier HQ as their traffiic diminish and their job cant be useful to the foreign airline. But we have seen thousands of these jobs cut by the domestic airline well before the predominance of the Gulf carriers.... so who is the one really creating the job cuts opportunities? All this summarizing in brief, of course, in a non aviation specific forum...

Short time (half day) hotel/room recommendations?

For the little price it charges I will do a 10hr lay over at Nana hotel... do not care if they charge the full night, when it is appr 1500b. a night... it can't go wrong and it is in center of the action for anything one wants to do.. no need to be specific where it is... anyone in the business knows it

    Hanrahans Bar soi 4 Bangkok

My favourite dining spot, often going for a chicken Caesar, a 5 minute walk from my hotel and 2 minute walk from the Center of the world (as one could describe NEP). With paradise (RIP) and chaos 9 in the proximity...it is really the ideal eating place. Quick service,, sufficient variety
  19. So far I often read complains about the Middle East carriers being supported by their governments. The story is slightly different but would be OT. What R.F says refers to another side of the expansion of the gulf airline fleets: "your own" government doing so. At least no blames on the carriers can be presented for this so, in a few words, (relatively speaking of course) "blame yourself", not the people flying those airlines. The debate could expand on the many military contracts assigned to keep those industries running (and not doing much good to the world... I have anyhow observed that gulf airlines are not THAT cheap and most of their rates are matched by western airlines. Was it the hen coming first or the egg? Facts are that with their hubs halfway through Europe and Asia (for instance) they can put together much higher load factors (LF) with better revenues. Staying in our topic (BKK) none of the EK (for instance) European airports can offer a higher number of daily flights to BKK than EK itself With much fresher airplanes they also win the case. Not saying this is bad or good, the whole subject has many faces as a diamond. But it is a fact: they made the best out of a remote location in the middle of nowhere (Gulf airports) and grew a completely new business.
