  1. Having taken several different modes of transport to Sukhhumvit at different times during the last few years (Bus,Taxi,Private car,Train, Limo), this is my take:

The best experience I had with drivers performing the complementary driver-service you get flying e.g. Emirates or Etihad in Business/First, they use e.g.: Limousine Express http://www.limousinethailand.com/.

These will take the toll route as far as possiible and will have knowledge of the area incl. short-cuts. This way is most likely the fastest, safest and most comfortable way, but also quiete expensive.(I don't use it unless it's complementry.)

Due to traffic if you get a taxi or private car you can have different experiences, some try to drive a shorter part of toll road to safe a little on toll. After a long flight, I would avoid the risk.

Since airport-buses are neither cheap not fast, I therefore think the second best option is the train, it's quite easy if you have a trolley or any other easy lagguage. And It's way cheap and comfortable. If you enter at the airport you will get a seat (almost guaranteed). As said before get of at maksan and take a tuk-tuk for the rest.

p.s.: My recommendation is for high traffic times, at all other times a simple taxi will do the job just fine. I woulrd try "Grubtaxi".

  2. I broke my time record last night getting from the plane to my apartment using the airport train. It took spot-on 50 minutes from stepping out of the plane to walking into my apartment at the top end of Sukhumivit Soi 11 (past Q bar) - 6:25pm to 7:15pm, Friday night.

@bangui : That is damm fast, for BKK.

@those of us who not so lucky to live in BKK and just come on holiday a few days a year.

Of course you can take the cap and considering what you just spend on the flight, it does not make a dent in your budget. However I have found the train to be a good alternative, given that you have only light luggage (not more than a trolley). Also you have to good view from the train.

One additional tip from my side. If you are not in a hurry, change at Phaya Thai and take the BTS back to Sukhumivit, it's easier to change there with luggage.

  3. Offline!!

No kidding I know what you mean, by sensory overload. ANd just to kind of equalize, I try to live mainly offline when I'm in LOS. I have no laptop or tablet, I bring an oldschool phone and if I need to I use an i-net caffee.

Everything else goes in my moleskin-notebook, again oldschool.

Being a super-nerd in my normal life - normally I would want to run the toaster with my tablet via a server in Nepal, I know this is not an solution as disired in the it and tec forum. But a few weeks a year I'm the complete opposite and it works perfect for me.

  4. Thank you OneTrueSaxon great report. :D

I stayed in Heaven@4 last time around and found it great - location - style - staff etc.

Now I'm putting together my next trip and looking what hotel to book.

So I was wandering, what is your favourite Hotel at this moment around NEP?

  5. The more I fly, the less I care about the different AIrlines. I don't care what IFE-Systems or Food or .. or ..

    What I care for is

    1.) Safety

    2.) Flighttime

    3.) Convinient Flightshedule

    So my two cents worth:

1.) If in Econemy, try to have stop-over on long haul, e.g. if you fly Sweden-Bkk maybe use Emirates or Etihad so you have two 6 hour stints and abreak to stretch your legs.

2.) Better - if you have the douw - fly Business. Then only book direkt flights and go for an overnight flight. Get on board, eat , drink sleep - zzzzzzzZZZZ - welcome to LOS - Perfect.

And about all the Inflight junk - bring a good book or an ipad (if you have to) and entertain yourself.

  6. There is a Sawasdee Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 8. I have stayed there last time very briefly (one night), it's nice and comfy. I was not in the mood that night and preety exhaused from the long fligth, so I did not learn about one important question.

    Is it LB friendly?

I would apprciate feedback of anyone that stayed there. Usually Sawasdee are GG and LB-friendly, however while I was there I only saw backpackers.
