  1. Cool thx. Any recommendations if i venture off with the BTS? I figure with the weather end of the month and traffic, walking and taxis will be tough so prefer something near the stations.

If you want quality upgraded Thai food, check out Soul Food Mahanakorn, a very short walk from the Thong Lor BTS. If alone, you can sit at the bar (they also do good drinks). If with a date, reservations advised. They're ladyboy friendly. I've brought dates there before. I've even seen a ladyboy employed as a server.

  2. just a quick question on the reporting requirement, does the 90 days reset every time you leave the country, or you have to register every 90 days regardless of the last time you came in?

If traveling often, having to make sure you were back in thailand to register would be a pain.

It resets every time you leave the country. Starts again on the day you return.

  3. I have been to the red cross clinic on ratchadamri road and the procedure there is fairly straightforward. It costs something like 200 baht to get tested for HIV and Syphilis. It is an anonymous clinic as well. No such identification card required. The only negative thing about this clinic is the waiting time. As it is cheap compared to private hospitals, many local Thai people come here to get checked. When I went I had to wait around 3.5 to 4 hours in total - from registration to getting my blood drawn, and then finally to receiving my results.

I just got back from the Red Cross for my six month testing. I got tested for both HIV and syphilis. 200 baht for each test. Waited less than an hour to get my blood drawn, then left and came back an hour later for the results, which were given to me within five minutes. So the entire visit was less than two hours total. It was my second time there, so my registration process was not as lengthy.

A note of interest, which was briefly mentioned in another thread. In addition to the standard antibodies test, they now do a test for the virus itself. Results for the antibodies test are given same day. Testing for the virus is done within two days and they only notify you of those results if you test positive. This is good news in two ways. 1) the virus test is usually quite expensive, but they are doing it as part of a funded research project at no extra charge. 2) those who've had a risky experience don't need to wait the standard 30 days to be tested, as those newly infected will test positive on the virus test within one or two weeks. two weeks max.

Very good experience at the Thai Red Cross today. Test results negative.

  4. look on https://www.airbnb.com/

joining is free and they have so many listings you will be hard pressed to choose only 1.

airbnb is the first place i'd look. you can also check out craigslist and this FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1448963955379462/. You should be able to find a sublet easily for 14,000 to 20,000 baht on a BTS or MRT line. The On Nut area is a good place to look.

  5. there are mini-vans that stop at don muang on their way to the mo chit bts. you'll have to find your way to the highway and then the bus/van stop. vans will pull over briefly to pick up riders. the destinations are written in thai on signs in the windows. look for the ones that say BTS/MRT. cost should be 20 baht.

  6.

Another thing you may have already thought of. It takes 3 weeks or so till the virus can develop enough to be seen by the tests. If she contacted AIDS say, 2 weeks ago, it wouldn't show up on a test yet. Minor possibility, I know.

Here's the risk breakdown per unprotected sex act.

There's also a breakdown from a San Francisco AIDS group, which crazycloud once posted.

  7. Thanks for the info, jimmi. Does a pack of six consist of six doses or is it that six pills make a single dose?

I was hoping to find a pharmacy in the Nana area where I'm staying, but if not I can jump on the BTS and head to Ekkamai station.
