Thailand cracks down on Viagra for foreigners

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's Food and Drug Administration, FDA, has decided to ban erectional dysfunctional medicine like Viagra and its generic equivalents (Elonza) for foreigners from May 1, 2012.

Dr. Somchai Maikaengraeng, deputy Minister of Public Health says the move was necessary because elderly foreigners, are hurting their health with the use of this class of drugs.

"Loss of potency as one ages is nature's way of safe guarding your health and should be accepted as such" says Dr. Somchai.

"Since there has been too many cases of adverse effects in older foreign men with conditions that contraindicate the use of the drug, and doctors just can't seem to say no when patients plead to get it prescribed, from May 1 the drug will not be available on prescription for foreigners over or under the counter in Thai pharmacies and hospitals.

It is feared that many older men plead for the medicine, just for sexual pleasure. FDA spokesman Dr. Ekkarin Fugmyleksomboon stresses that such use is immoral and against government policy. He also revealed there is an increasing number of cases of older people using viagra and dying while having sex, as they can't control their "urge".

Several foreign tourists have been found dead in compromising circumstances in recent months. In these cases Thai authorities try to protect the family of the man and tell them they died of a heart attack. However, while monitoring internet forums for illegal content, police have noticed people blaming the police for cover ups while they only want to protect the relatives, says Dr. Fugmyleksomboon.

Dr. Ekkarin continues: "As the drug is not necessary for the treatment of any life threatening condition and its usage is so hard to control, it is better to ban altogether, so we are putting the drug in the same category as heroin and amphetamines".

The Thai Authorities see no public health benefit in helping older foreigner men get or maintain erections and indeed, avoiding same might have a positive impact in terms of decreasing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, STIs, says Dr. Somchai of the Ministry of Public Health.

Thai postal authorities have been instructed to open packages from known drug supplying countries, and any such drugs found will be confiscated and the consignee taken to court for violation of Thai law.

I don't want to create a panic for those who use these ED drugs. I don't think we have to find an old Thai fella to buy them for us. The question I have is if they catogorize the same as heroin and amphetamines what happens if we get caught with it on us?

Jimbo's comment on this:

if a law doesn't suit the thais, then they don't obey it. This will be yet another law on the statute book that is simply ignored! Don't worry there'll be no difficulty obtaining supplies.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Fuck em! This sounds like profiling aimed toward farangs!

This goes on in the USA,also as most health insurance companies don't cover "ED meds" :(

It seems like the establishment doesn't want us to be happy!

I don't always need it,but sometimes a good dose of "Vitamin C(Cialis)" does make for a more memorable,Happy experience(for both parties). :D

I really hope they don't class "ED meds" in the same vein as heroin or meth! As I am very anti these things!

Sorry for resurrecting such an old thread :( but I didn't want to open yet another one.

While the first post of this thread obviously was just an April Fool's day joke by SiamMan, this is probably for real:

According to TV (Thai Visa) and Daily News, the BiB from Lumphini police station confiscated all the Viagra and sextoys from the stalls around Nana, apparently particularly those on Soi 3:

https://forum.thaivisa.com/topic/1082752-two-million-bahts-worth-of-sex-toys-and-viagra-taken-off-the-street-in-police-raid/

Has that something to do with the upcoming general election?

I think the big and cheap Chinese-Thai pharmacy next to Bully's pub on Sukhumvit near Nana has also closed it's doors or is about to close.

So if you need your daily dose of generic Cialis, would you now have to go to a police post? Perhaps to the one on the corner of Sukhumvit + Nana Soi 4? Same price as the street stalls? Just asking for a friend... ;-)

Thanks

And it's not even April's Fool's day today...or is it?

I'd read it somewhere, I believe here:

Probably has not much to do with the crackdown this week on the illegal stalls selling apcalis and whatever around Suk Soi 3 as they are apparently going to reopen at a different location. Anyone in the know where that new location would be? And what will happen to the (I guess precious) real estate of this pharmacy? Another fast food joint? Carl's Senior?

Thanks :-!

Get in while you can. NEP & soi 4 will be history soon enough. Singaporification, bending over for the Chinese and just plain old property speculation will spell the end for Nana. This is good news for the adventurous BM  prepared to search out his fun but less appealing for the theme park loving, everything on a plate basement monger.

In time stories will filter through of wild nights in Thonburi - bars, lounges & guesthouses accomodating crazy farangs with fistfuls of baht just looking for a good time.  And there will always be ladyboys...

Such is the cash cow nature of all farang tourism to Thailand the supply of all our needs will generally get met....by illegal means or other.

Passed by Soi 3 a few minutes ago and though the stalls with the sex toys and lingerie are indeed gone - or at least I didn't see any - there are small (smaller than before) street stalls selling kamagra and stuff. The guys selling them stand at quite a distance away however, apparently so that they can bugger off when the BIB reappear...

That is true, Boomerang! No April fool's day joke!

What's also true however is that the Chinese-Thai pharmacy next to Bully's will be closing shortly (the large one, not the smaller one next door afaik).

Went there and they must have cleared now 90% of their stock already. Shelves look pretty empty. Shutters down, just a small door entrance. In front, a woman with a small stall selling balloons for children.

The Viagra / kamagra stands around Soi 3 are mostly back but the ones openly selling sex toys not (yet).

The recently refurbished side walk on this stretch of the Sukhumvit looks nice.
