Long John 1,841 #1 Posted August 18, 2025 Was about time I booked accommodation for my upcoming trip and after checking prices decided to give my normal area the flick. Have booked a condo in Soi 55. Hot tub, pool etc. Quite a way from my usual haunt in Soi11. I need a change anyway. Anybody stayed down around Soi 55? Soi 11 is like an old pair of shoes, and I just cruise around on autopilot, and very convenient for dragging girls back to the room. I am guessing a taxi would be the best way to travel down to 55 from the triangle. Don't think the girls would be too impressed about getting on the train? I've been living on one of the Thonglor (or Soi 55) side streets for the last year when in Bangkok. Happy to help if I can. It's an excellent area for nightlife etc and much nicer in some ways, Thonglor is famous for being HiSo so it's obviously a nice area however the scene there might not be to everyone's taste. I like it there - mostly (some deliberately HiSo bullshit there annoys me) but it's nothing like Lower Sukhumvit for p4p options. There are a few p4p places like BJ bars, massage joints and more Japanese focused places in the area but that might not be what you want but it's really not an area known for that. I can give you some more information if interested. Where on Soi Thonglor is your condo? It's a long Soi and the best action begins quite a distance up from Sukhumvit. Grab or Bolt can get you to the LB triangle quite quickly but with taxis they may take a bit longer if you end up on Sukhumvit in the traffic of course. You might or might not not be interested in trawling around the clubs and some of the coolest bars in the area but you can find some really hot girls there, some might be interested in a bit of freelance work but it's not really that scene. I've bumped into a few current and ex CIB girls there on nights off too. It wouldn't surprise me if any LBs you're on LT with would jump at the chance for a night out there instead of the usual spots. Space Monkey 4 #3 Posted August 18, 2025 I’ve stayed at Centrepoint Thong Lo (= soi 55). Just take a taxi. Easy. BTS Thong Lo is just a short moto taxi away if you prefer that. Some hotels offer a Tuktuk/ golf cart service to BTS. Centrepoint did. Food wise I wasn’t impressed. In daytime some great streetfood stalls opposite Centrepoint, restaurant wise not impressed. 1 Long John reacted to this

I'm surprised to read this as Thonglor as well as the nearby areas of Phrom Phong and Ekkamai have some of the best places to eat in the city at a wide range of prices (albeit some are overpriced in Thonglor itself). Personally I find the food to be much better than in Lower Sukhumvit but as a rule that goes for most places in Bangkok compared to a farang focused area like Nana. I guess it's just a matter of personal taste though. There's quite a bit that annoys me about the area (despite liking it overall) but the food there is one of the positives for me at least. If any restaurant or bar recommendations are wanted I can help with that but won't just spam them here otherwise. Space Monkey 4 #5 Posted August 18, 2025 I found it hard to find a restaurant that fitted my needs, well being and made me comfortable to be there. I visited a “Michelin recommended” restaurant but found the food was poor. Prices were high. I decided to take food at midday from the food stall opposite the hotel and ordered in (grab) in the evening and eat in my room. But of course, this is just my opinion. Others may find the food to be excellent. And fair to say it was in 2022, just after Thailand opened up after Covid. I’ve stayed at the same hotel in 2023 and 2024, but ordered in or ate at Det5 (soi 8).
Edisto 1,162 #6 Posted August 18, 2025 Yeah the worst food in Bangkok is hands down in Sukhumvit. And you mooks who go on about DET 5 being great, well....I'll keep my mouth shut.Pretty hard to NOT find great food st all price points outside of Suk especially in places like Thonglor Ekkamai Sathorn and Silom which are just on the perimeter. 2 Long John and mikel reacted to this

To be fair there probably is better options outside of Sukhumvit but Det 5 has always been consistently good in my opinion 1 Space Monkey reacted to this

To the OP @Long John if you want some tips on the Thonglor area, I'd be happy to help if possible. It's a good area and should still be convenient enough for your mongering needs as well as offering a change of scenery. BTW, I did enjoy your use of the word "mooks" @Edisto . Not enough people use that word in my opinion and it seemed I've been fighting that battle alone for too long now. I'll have to buy you a beer some time. 2 Edisto and Long John reacted to this
Unavowed 1,637 #9 Posted August 19, 2025 A vaguely related question since the OP asked about travel, but is the (supposed) crackdown on not wearing helmets on moto taxis being enforced or has this gone back to normal now? If I go to Thonglo I usually take the BTS and then a moto from the corner and don’t fancy a 2,000 baht fine! 1 Edisto reacted to this

I regularly take trips on motorbikes around Sukhumvit, never had an issue with it. Sometimes drivers don't even wear a helmet. But ofcourse, if you meet an enthusiastic one I wouldn't worry too much though ... 2 Long John and Unavowed reacted to this
Genghis 3,032 #11 Posted August 19, 2025 Finding a motorbike taxi or Grab with a spare helmet that fits me is very often a problem. Do you guys also encounter that or is it just my massive head like the Mrs claims?

This Saturday will be brutal @Genghis - forever in the Thai/Bangkok calendar there will be a pre and post Speedpool reference in any conversation that mentions time. People will talk about BS and SE (versus BC and CE/AD). In fact - this Friday could be our last supper…we will need 13 BM’s in total. We can call it….wait for it…Good Friday! I got a call from Glasgow City Council this morning, asking, based on their experience managing Celtic - Rangers games, if they could offer their support. 1 Genghis reacted to this
