I found a little hidden gem right at the end of Soi 1 Suk - Thanaka Myanmar Restaurant. A very basic restaurant quite busy with local Burmese. This was my first time trying Burmese food and I was blown away with the flavours. And this place is a 'cheap eats'. I just had the Chicken Curry (110B), 20B for rice, comes with a nice chicken soup. Wow. I think it was so different from Thai food. Not close to anything I've eaten before. The evil looking curry sauce is spicy but not overpowering, so you still get a hit from all the different flavours - garlic, ginger, lemongrass and whatever they put in it. Best thing about this place is it's only 90 Baht for a large Singha. I'm going back for more!

Food pics on your next food review please! I have eaten at many restaurants on Soi 11, though I have never eaten at I'm Aroi. I usually check out the food pics on Google Maps to decide if I want to eat there. I had not seen any good pics of the food from any of the reviewers posting on Google Maps, so never stepped inside.

@Genghis post about Amin Biryani has me reminiscing about the various restaurants I frequent in Bangkok so sharing my knowledge for other foodies on the board. My favourite Japanese restaurant in Bangkok is Yuna on Soi 11/1. It is not cheap but excellent, ridgy didge Japanese cuisine and lovely Thai staff who all speak Japanese. They giggle at me when I order in Japanese. it is not cheap. You can get a lunch special for about 350 Baht. Dinner time with beers I am usually spending over 1000 Baht. For cheapish Japanese - I found an awesome Japanese restaurant on Soi 24 called Ramen Ichiban (meaning Number 1 Ramen). While it specialises in Ramen noodle soups (170 - 220B per bowl) they do also have an extensive menu of what I call Japanese comfort food. Donburi bowls for around 200B, Katsu Curry 250B, Oyakodon 200B, Katsudon 200B. I think the best meal you can have there is a half bowl of ramen for 100b and a half portion of fried rice 100B. You may be able to get a cheaper Thai meal under 200B but if you into good Japanese food then this place is worth a visit. They serve complimentary oolong tea which they keep coming to give you refills. Every time I've been there, I'm the only Gaijin/Farang, with mostly Japanese business men scoofing down their lunch. It's located on the corner of the dodgy alley Soi 24/1 with loads of rub and tug / full service joints to enjoy before or after your meal! We do have seriously good Yum Cha in Sydney. Better than Hong Kong in my opinion. Many of the top Dim Sum chefs in Hong Kong migrated to Australia before China took over.

Nice one I'll check that out. For very good Dim Sum in the LB Triangle, Hong Teh in the Ambassador Hotel on Soi 11 is excellent. They got a very good Dim Sum chef. I've been there 3 times and will visit on each trip. It is not cheap but top quality. The BBQ Baked Pork Pies are sensational!

Bangrak is a very interesting area - alot of Chinese business along the road. I've stayed a few times at the Hilton Garden Inn at the end of Silom Road which is a short walk to Bangrak. The Shangri-la is also in that area, just up from Jack's Bar. There is a little Dim Sum restaurant called Little Dragon worth a visit if you like Yum Cha. 50 Baht a pop for their steamed dishes. Agreed Mark Weins is very annoying especially when he makes that yummy face. He needs a knuckle sandwich when he does that.

I was in Bangkok the last 2 weeks of July this year. Lovely! While it is start of rainy season, it only rained a few times during the day. Do expect the odd late afternoon shower or evening shower but they only last 20 minutes or so. Same same for August. I was there first week of September and had alot of rain. Many mega lightning storms that lasted an hour or more 4 days in a row before I left. Thunder and lightning, very very frightening! I think you'll enjoy the low season in July.

That is kind of a good service to protect their guests. I wonder how many unsuspecting guys woke up from the drunken stupor when they were handed this in reception. Well he did go back to Thailand. He just didn't tell his friends This is the sign at the front entrance of Atlanta Hotel:

Apparently this hotel, featured in some TV show, in some country, which became a hit, and the hotel still receives many tourists from that country. It is like an Art Deco hotel, think Black and White checkered floor in reception and funky, old school art throughout. Soi 2 is an awesome base with a good range of hotels to choose from but this one i'll not be visiting Animal lovers PARTICULARLY welcome Which country are they coming from?

The Doubletree on Soi 2 is very nice, excellent buffet breakfast for a 4 star. Cut thru Maison Hotel to get to Soi 4, very close to Why Not. The Doubletree on Soi 26 is also very nice (breakfast not as good but ok) The Hilton Grand Asoke on Soi 23 is also very Grand. A few hundred meters to Soi Cowboy, across from Asoke BTS, easy walk to LB triangle.

Aphiwat Central (Bang Sue Grand Station) is so confusing! Biggest train station in South East Asia running at under 5% capacity. It is located 10Km from Khao San Road, a bit further from Sukhumvit. I had a 7am train leaving there. I left my hotel in Soi 11 at 6am and the cheapest taxi I could get was fixed 400 Baht for a 20 minute taxi ride ( I asked a few) - maybe 30 - 40 minutes in peak hour. (i don't have Grab etc). I have also caught the underground MRT from Sukhumvit Station to Bang Sue (first name they gave the station) Aphiwat Central (the revised name 12 months later). The trip took maybe 40 minutes door to door and cost a few dollars if that.

Last year I stayed on Soi 2 at the Doubletreet by Hilton. Just down from there is the BIDH Bangkok International Dental Hospital which looks brand new. About a 6 story building https://dentalhospitalthailand.com/ I did check out their prices and they seem to be about 40% of what I pay in Australia.

Breakfast, tea/coffee/soft drinks/snacks all day, 2 hours evening canapes 5.30pm - 7.30pm (beer/wine/spirits). Located on Level 27 with awesome view over Nana BTS and down to Soi 11. Outdoor balcony if you are a smoker but some reason they don't let you smoke weed there View from the Club Lounge Balcony - good sunset views.

I've not stayed at Sofitel but have stayed at Hyatt Regency many times. It is my preferred hotel in Bangkok. I am a loyal Hyatt member so prefer to stay at a Hyatt (there are now 5 Hyatt's in Bangkok - 2 Hyatt Places Soi 1 and Soi 24, Grand Hyatt near Chit Lom BTS, a Park Hyatt near Ploen Chit BTS and the Hyatt Regency) I've stayed at them all except for the new Hyatt Place on Soi 1. Hyatt Regency is my pick. Probably comparable prices to the Sofitel which is only 100 meters away. Both Hyatt Regency and Sofitel excellent location for access to the LB Triangle - 270 meters to CIB, 500 meters to Cindys (take the short cut down Soi 13 and thru Ambassador Hotel to get to Soi 11) and 650 meters to Why Not (take short cut through Soi 8 - Soi 6 then onto Soi 4). I've had the buffet breakfast at Hyatt Regency which is excellent but I've not tried lunch or dinner in that restaurant (have heard good things) but there are some excellent restaurants right next to the Hyatt - highly rated Korean BBQ within the Hyatt complex - undercover to get there, Margeritta Storm right next door (open 24 hours) and plenty more walking distance in Soi 13 and Soi 11. Room service food is very good and is delivered in under 30 minutes. There is also the very cool rooftop bar at Hyatt - Spectrum Lounge with awesome views which you pay for in the drinks and food. I highly recommend paying for the Club Lounge if you don't get it as part of your membership. I prefer breakfast there, coffee/tea, snacks all day long and evening canapes (drinks and snacks) make up for the price of access. The food is very good, enough to make a meal of it! The staff don't hold back in serving drinks.They know me well and bring me my next beer before I finished my last and right at end of the happy hour at 7.30pm they bring me 2 beers. From Hyatt you can walk undercover to get to Nana BTS. There are escalators at Hyatt which takes you up to the skybridge to get to Nana BTS. And most importantly, very much guest friendly. Very easy to glide through the reception area to get to the elevators to get to the lifts with your guest/s. I've never been stopped to ask for ID for my 'friend'. I've stayed a few times in rainy season and I always grab there large umbrellas from reception area incase it rains, most of which I leave at Cindy's or CIB if not raining when I leave.

Damn! Buffet lunch followed by 8 course dinner. Where do you put it? hahahaha I have walked past that Monkey Pod / Blue Elephant. Looks good. Sounds good too.

Great news for the US folk itching for their Bangkok fix. B787-9 is a great aircraft. Shame United it not a great airline. I flew between Sydney and Chicago via LA 4 times with United in Business Class. The cabin crew were always these crusty old, angry women that did not understand the concept of service! I heard that long serving cabin crew with United get to pick the routes they fly. It seems all the old bags love to fly to Australia. I now got United on my no fly list

If you are flying Qantas from Sydney to Bangkok, then you will be on a Finnair plane! It is effectively a Qantas flight (QF flight number), QF inflight magazine, even napkins with Qantas logo but the plane and pilots are Finnair. The cabin crew are all Thai - I presume sub-contracted by Qantas. I flew that route twice last year with Qantas and had the Finnair A330-300 plane. Both Premium Economy and Economy. Good service from the Thai crew, food was pretty good.

I would rather hammer a ladyboy but each to their own. You do you!

The ham and cheese toasties at 7-11 are very good

I rate Vesuvio as the best pizza in Sukhumvit and I've tried quite a few different places. I had their excellent Diavola pizza which is a bit spicy. I also tried their Deliziosa pizza for 480b. Just along Soi 8 on the next little laneway there is Otto Pizza which is very good, just not as good as Vesuvio. This is their vegetarian pizza

Speaking of French chefs or French food, there is a very good French Cafe on Soi 11 - Chez LN, directly opposite the Aloft Hotel. I stayed at the Aloft and went across a few times to Chez LN French Cafe. Excellent Quiche Lorraine (who said real men don't eat quiche) and the Croque Monsieur was pretty good despite being dripping in butter. I do like a good ham and cheese toasty. The coffee was exellent too.

That looks like a quality feed! I had an awesome Aussie Meat Pie at The Lost Aussie Pub on Soi 6 (right next to the short cut from Soi 8). Homemade, served with gravy but as an Aussie I smothered it in tomato sauce. You can get it as a meal with mash and peas or beans. \'

I used points to stay at Park Hyatt about 2 years ago. It is your typical Park Hyatt, very very nice but a bit snooty (the guests, not from the staff). It's about a 20 minute walk down to the heart of the LB triangle or get on Ploenchit BTS for 1 stop to Nana which will take almost the same time after going up the stairs, buying a ticket, go up the stairs to the platform. just miss a train and waiting a few minutes for the next one. Like all International branded hotels they are guest friendly with no judgement You have to walk through the middle of reception area (desks on both sides) to get to the elevators and most times I walked through there were loads of guests loitering around. Staff never said anything, didn't ask for id from my guest but you definitely got some stares from the other guests but who cares. When I stayed there was some sort of economic forum on so the hotel was full of many Thai officials and international business people on a junket. If you looking to use/earn Hyatt points then I recommend Hyatt Regency Sukhumvit (half the price), which in my opinion is not your typical 'Regency' much better! And the best location on corner of Soi 13.

Not an English fry up but more like an American breakfast, I went into Breakfast Story which is in the same laneway as Cindy's Secret off Soi 11, they serve breakfast all day long. Had their Breakfast Story special of eggs (scrambled or fried), bacon (crispy or not crispy - I ordered not crispy but it still came out crispy), a 3 stack of pancakes with butter and maple syrup, country style potatoes and a tiny bowl of fruit to make it feel healthy!). 300 Baht which is not cheap but still much cheaper for the same thing back home! This was a very good feed.
