Recommended Posts

Anyone give me a glue as the simplest tablet etc for replacing desktop or laptop.

Used for general surfing, emailing, watching movies etc.

Powerful but no need for gaming etc.

I'd buy a good Android tablet. Android is a much freer environment than Apple products, and there's a million quality apps, mostly free or at least dirt cheap. Something like 80% of the cell phone market is now Android. Can't help you with a tablet though. I have an LG Android cell phone, but not much difference in function really. I'd look through reviews of cell phones on reddit. The younger folks know what's going on with electronics.

eg, enter something like this in a google search box: (say if I were interested in a samsung tablet). "site", etc narrows down the search to reddit only.

You'll be limited to Apps if you buy something that runs iOS or Android. If you're really looking for a desktop replacement (has all the functionality of a Windows or Mac computer) then get a tablet that runs Windows. Surface Pro is a good option, or if you want to use it as a laptop sometimes, Surface Book is a good option. There's also an array of other tablets that run Windows which will serve as a good replacement.

Will you be streaming movies or downloading them? If you want to download anything, don't get an iPad... If you just want to stream from websites, surf the web and check emial... okay iPad is an okay option. But as soon as you run into a situation where you want to connect to a TV or monitor via HDMI, use a USB device or download a full program like Word or Excel, you'll wish you hadn't. My iPad basically gathers dust because it doesn't do anything my iPhone can't, and it can't do anything that my tablet/laptop hybrid can.

In general, it's better to get a popular device and operating system because if you have a problem there'll be lots of info on how to solve it for free on the web. The less popular the platform, the less info is available and the more you'll be dependent on your local service center. That's one of the reasons I chose Android, but Chomebooks are very popular and people seem to like them. (Just my personal opinion, but I'd stay away from anything made by Microsoft.)

Why is an ipad bad for downloading? Clash of software?

My background is a windows 7 desktop.

I want basic things like email ,surfing, downloading (porn)

filling in web based forms etc, streaming movies and sports.

Have you looked at Chrome books, laptops that run Chrome OS. If you do a lot of typing, you're going to want a keyboard, one advantage of a Chrome book.

The Chromebooks, however, have limited processor capabilities that tend to slow things down when movie watching or have more than one screen open.

iPad is not good for downloading because there is no file browser. It is designed solely for you to run apps that are installed out of the box and what's in the iTunes store. So unless you do some non-standard stuff with an iPad, you aren't going to be able to go to some porn site, download five or six 400mb movies, and then come back and watch them later. The other reason as that standard iPad caps out at 128gb of storage space and that's it! I could download 128gb of porn in a month... If you want more than that, you'd have to upgrade to an iPad pro which is like $1000 for 256 version... You could get an excellent laptop for that amount. And back to the file explorer problem, connecting it to a USB hard drive isn't much of an option for extra storage either. You could jailbreak the device or something, but then you break the warranty and it's a headache.

The other thing is that iPad by default doesn't support certain file types like MKV. You'd have to download a separate app for those files. Even streaming flash on iPad is not possible.... Thankfully, most websites have switched to HTML5, so its not too big of a deal, but you will definitely run into instances where you want to watch a movie but can't because it's only available in flash. So when it comes to streaming movies and porn, iPad is a 2nd class device, and when it comes to downloading, you're not going to have a good experience.

Filling in web based forms, and surfing the web are a breeze with iPad. Email is fine too.... Keep in mind that you're probably going to not want to type anything long on the virtual keyboard on the screen, but its okay. Streaming sports will be fine as well.

But you can do all that with a Windows Tablet or an Android Tablet too.

If you're certain that you never want to connect your device via HDMI to a monitor or TV and you have no intention of ever installing full fledged programs like Excel, Word, Photoshop, etc.... Android would be my #1 choice. It is much more open than iPad, but less secure and wonky.

If you want a bulletproof device that is sleek, sexy, looks great, but is severely limited in functionality... iPad or iPad Pro.

If you want a true desktop replacement, go with a Windows tablet. I have a surface pro that I use as a desktop when I'm home (with bluetooth keyboard, mouse) connected to a full sized monitor. When I'm on the road, I unplug it and use it as a laptop, and when I'm in bed or in a bus or something, I can use it in tablet mode. I can wirelessly stream TV/Movies to my television with a wireless microsoft adapter (only some tablets support this- Surface book is one of them). But you really only need this option if you want full PC functionality and need to install full PC programs. Otherwise Android will work for you, and you actually do have file folder functionality with Android.
