BTS vs Taxi's

Recommended Posts

Hi all BM's, I know this maybe a stupid/newbie question, But I was planning to actually do some sight seeing during the day. so I was wondering what is better to do just pay for taxi's or use the BTS. I used the BTS last year & it wasn't that confusing. Because of the flooding/first time, I did not get around much. So I payed by the trip. I was thinking of either of getting a smart pass or day pass? I guess my question is which the best option for a newbie traveling alone?

I will be staying BKK Nov 6th - 14th

BTS has the advantage that whatever traffic is in town the travel will be smooth and seamless.

Taxi have the disadvantage of being stucked in the traffic. Peak hours or rain can represent a taxi drive challenge.

I recommend you take a smart card, you can recharge it by 200thb. It avoids the hassle of knowing ahead how much it costs to go from A to B, have coins available, etc. I think it is 3 year valid. So any remaining credit will stay in it.

Taxi have the advantage of taking you precisely from point A to B even if no public transport is around, no walking needs (a value also in raining season). You might be bothered by drivers not willing to take you where you need (they simply refuse to take you on board once you tell them where you have to go) or trying to ask you 100thb for a 40baht ride....

3 passengers sharing the cost makes the taxi more convenient than BTS.

My advice .... depends on where you are going, and where you are staying! And if there's only one of you travelling.

If you are in Sukhumvit, traffic is often backed up, esp 4pm-9pm, so BTS much better. But if you are going to say Royal Palace, or Chinatown - then take BTS to the river (Saphan Taksin station) & take a river ferry.

Dont forget the MRT subway trains too. Easy way to get to Chatuchak Market, or Ratchada area. Or to get from Asoke to Patpong. Not many farangs seem to use MRT, but it's worth thinking about.

Good suggestion from scottie about the smartpass. Also saves queuieng for tickets on each trip

yeah ,,bout the first thing i buy in bkk is a smartcard ,, few different types of package deals you can get for the bts ,,i love the bts ,,although it gets pretty packed at certain times,,,Depending on where i go but mostly i use the bts as the "backbone" for my transport and then catch a cab or ferry for the final leg of the journey,,,best thing about the bts is you get quite a view while travelling ,,, oh yeah and i love listening to recorded voice advising on the stations ( ie ;- "next station naaanaaaa") lol :D

LOL know what you mean when your sitting on BTS waiting for that naaanaa station voice, for some reason it even sounds sexy but its probably psychological cos I know im just a few minutes away from LB heavan!

oh yeah and the pronunciation of Ploenchit  i think im still trying to figure out what she is saying for 100% sure,,,,yep i love the BTS announcer voice :D

Yeah the sexy voice also beats any chit chat with the tuk tuk & taxi drivers. You also have the chance to bump into LBs on the BTS - I wonder if anyone here has any experience chatting them up on board? I always seem to get stuck sitting next to an old granny or uni student with her head stuck in her iphone and I just feel like a smelly farang about to get off at nana (maybe because I am).

Mardhi do any of the GB girls use BTS to commute to work? It would be a fantasy of mine to be eyeing up a lb on the BTS and then later run into her in GB. Would be like living out a porno storyline :)

Several I would think, from the Ekkamai Prakhanong areas. Always interesting whether they acknowledge you when out & about, or vice versa. Depends who it is, but I got some interesting looks chatting to Aui once on BTS!

Bumped into Gigi and Dear on their way to Guess bar one early evening getting off the BTS at Nana. They came over and asked if I was going to the bar, To which I was, via my hotel for a shower and a change of clothes. A week or so later I saw Ink and Eye ( thin Eye, not Eye with the back tatoo's) from Guess walking past the Landmark Hotel while having dinner. I think they had just got off the BTS.

I've not bumped into LBs but have done with a GG. I took the underground from Thai Cultural to Asoke and opposite me in my carriage was a smoking young Issan girl with a big bag. We both got out at Asoke and went our separate ways (I was going to Penalty Spot to meet friends)...well, by chance of fate, about 3 hours later I was upstairs in Midnite bar with the same little hottie grinding away on my old boy! Fantastic!

Must have been her working clothes and boots in that big bag!

I think most of the gurlz go to work with friends who live near them. So it's more cost effective for them to share a taxi. I knew this one ladyboy who lived with another. A few other ladyboys would come over to their place before work and they would give the mirrors a good working over while they primped for the evening. It was a unique look in on them and there prework rituals. I of course would have my friend translate as much as could for me. they mostly went on about the night before or some gurl they didn't like.

I have seen a ladyboy or two during the day on sky train, but no one I recognised from the bar scene.
